"Today, a growing number of clinicians are recognizing that we can approach stuttering through the lens of neurodiversity, or what we call “verbal diversity,” rather than presuming that stuttering is something to be 'fixed'." https://t.co/czZau05inT

We are sorry to hear that playwright and scriptwriter David Seidler has passed away at the age of 86.
Seidler, who was himself a person who stammered, received an Oscar for THE KING'S SPEECH: the true story of King George VI and his speech therapist, Lionel Logue.
We were disappointed to see the @BBC, when discussing Seidler's legacy, using the tired narrative of "suffering" and "overcoming" a stammer.
We urge outlets reporting on this sad news to consult these editorial guidelines, and Seidler's own words above:

Regardless of political affiliations, we will continue to remind people that people who stutter, as well as anyone with speech differences and disabilities, have a right to live without this familiar and disrespectful mockery and humiliation. https://t.co/UFJDz0NIjr

I know for me I never really forget moments of stuttering that brought me pain. It is possible however to make peace with this. What has really helped me is making moments of stuttering that I can be proud of. These moments reinforce the acceptance and realisation that I can be who I am, stutter and all.
