The primary connection between Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, the SLC Armed Queers (a socialist LGBTQ+ organization based in Salt Lake City, Utah), and Cuba revolves around their shared involvement in pro-Cuba solidarity activism, including trips to the island nation for revolutionary training and ideological alignment with its socialist government.

Karen Bass, a longtime activist before entering politics, made at least 15 trips to Cuba starting in the early 1970s as a teenager and young adult. These visits were organized through the Venceremos Brigade, a U.S.-based group founded in 1969 to foster solidarity with the Cuban Revolution by sending American volunteers to work on construction projects, attend political education sessions, and learn guerrilla tactics. Bass has described her experiences as eye-opening, emphasizing connections between Black American struggles and Cuban socialism, and she attended speeches by Fidel Castro, whom she later called "charismatic" upon his 2016 death.

The SLC Armed Queers, formed in 2020, describes itself as a "socialist LGBTQ organization dedicated to the defense and success of oppressed people's movements," explicitly training queer, trans, and allied individuals in firearms use for "community self-defense" against capitalism, fascism, and state violence.

In May 2025, group members, including leader Ermiya Fanaeian (a transgender Palestinian immigrant), traveled to Cuba on a May Day solidarity brigade trip. There, they met Cuban officials, participated in revolutionary events, and studied tactics from Palestinian medical students training in Cuba, who reportedly declared, "If we're terrorists, we're proud to be terrorists" in reference to anti-imperialist resistance.

The group returned inspired to "bring the revolution home," aligning explicitly with Cuba's anti-capitalist mission. This trip echoes Karen Bass and Venceremos Brigade activities; the group has since faced federal scrutiny amid the September 10, 2025, assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, with investigations probing possible foreknowledge or ties to radical networks.

Ideological and Organizational Parallels: Both Bass and the SLC Armed Queers draw from Cuba's revolutionary model to advance socialist causes in the U.S. Bass's Venceremos Brigade involvement directly influenced her early organizing in Los Angeles' Black community, including anti-apartheid and community defense efforts.

Similarly, SLC Armed Queers frames its armed training as "queer resistance" against systemic oppression, mirroring Brigade-style solidarity with Cuba as a beacon for global leftist movements.

The SLC Armed Queers' recent Cuba trip and deletion of social media post-Kirk's death have amplified comparisons, with some outlets questioning if modern groups like theirs continue the Venceremos legacy Bass helped build.

This has fueled broader debates on leftist activism, with no proven direct collaboration but clear thematic overlaps in promoting armed, anti-imperialist revolution inspired by Cuba.
