Eighteen years ago, in 2006, Olympique Lyonnais were getting ready to celebrate their fifth consecutive league title in front of their home supporters, with three matches still left to play. The occasion was made even more special because it came against their fiercest rivals.

On 30 April, Saint-Étienne’s players would probably have preferred to be anywhere other than Lyon. The home fans had already promised a colourful celebration for their team’s latest triumph.

There were even rumours that the Lyon players themselves had something planned to add to the occasion.

They certainly lived up to the talk. All eleven Lyon players walked onto the pitch with their heads painted blue, white and red, the colours of the club. The humiliation was not only visual either, as the reigning champions went on to dismantle their rivals with a dominant 4–0 victory.

A taunt that has gone down in derby history.
