Wisdom ... Forgotten is a weekly newsletter from Prof. Bassem K. Khafagy and Dr. Christopher Washington, revisiting classic books on higher education.

Governance built for elite systems strains under mass access. That was diagnosed decades ago and is still largely unanswered.
The path forward does not begin with discarding the past. It begins with recovering durable ideas and applying them with discipline.
They warned about the prestige trap. They mapped the forces that resist change. They showed how institutions can reproduce inequality while working to address it.
None of it was wrong. It simply stopped being read.
Higher education is not short of ideas. It has struggled to turn them into everyday practice.
Scholars mapped today's pressures decades ago. That wisdom did not fail. It moved from the centre of how universities are designed to the margins of how they are discussed.
A university does not change a life by being excellent. It changes a life by being present.
Excellence is measured and ranked. Presence is not, which is why it is so often the first thing an institution quietly stops funding.
Science & Wisdom
Science is not the only way to knowledge. We learn from science, traditions, history, religions & other faucets of wisdom.
"cancelling" all but science will not work. humanity must stay "Humane". Science is a tool not a destiny.

Getting Smarter
Acquiring technology alone will not lead to smart learning or “Smart universities”.
Carrying a smart phone does not necessarily make a person “Smart”.
Becoming “Smarter” is a holistic process not a technology-shopping spree.

Responsibilities are Opportunities
Many successful careers and lives started when the person did not shy away from carrying a responsibility. It later turned out to be an opportunity of a lifetime.
Always think of new responsibilities as potential opportunities.
