Every school day counts! As we prepare for the new school year, Suffolk Public Schools is updating its attendance policy to better support student achievement. Key updates include:

✅ Students are considered chronically absent after missing more than 10% of the school year.
✅ This equates to 17 days for elementary, middle, and year-long high school courses, or 9 days per semester for students in semester-long high school courses.
✅ Students will have opportunities to earn back attendance time through Saturday Academy and before- and after-school tutoring.
✅ Medical exemptions will be available for qualifying circumstances.

Lakeland High School is honored to receive both the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Award and the Stay in the Game Award.

The Claudia Dodson Award recognizes schools that make sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity a priority through policies, leadership, and a culture of respect that extends beyond competition. The Stay in the Game Award honors schools that complete an entire athletic year without a single player or coach ejection—a testament to discipline, character, and respect for the game.

These recognitions reflect the commitment of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, families, and fans to representing Lakeland with integrity, respect, and excellence every day. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this achievement possible!

Our Suffolk Public Schools Communication & Community Engagement Team was recently recognized on the national stage, earning 17 awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) for excellence in school communications, public engagement, marketing, and strategic storytelling. Beginning Monday, June 8 - Friday, August 7, 2026, all schools and departments will transition to a four-day work week. Summer office hours will be Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with the following exceptions:

Facilities Department: 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Technology Department 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Juneteenth Holiday will be observed on Thursday, June 18th and Independence Day will be observed on Thursday, July 2nd. Therefore, all schools and departments will be closed on June 18th, June 19th, July 2nd and July 3rd.

Normal office hours will resume on Monday, August 10th.

Congratulations to Nansemond River High School's Karen Waddell on being named a Quarterfinalist for the 2027 Grammy Music Educator Award! Selected as one of just 202 quarterfinalists nationwide, Ms. Waddell earned this prestigious recognition from a pool of more than 2,100 nominations submitted across the country.

Students from across eastern Virginia recently showcased their creativity, talent, and self-expression through the Regions 1 & 2 Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) Writing Competition. Designed specifically for students receiving special education services, the annual competition celebrates the unique voices and writing abilities of students with disabilities while encouraging confidence, communication, and creativity through the written word.

Congratulations to Ava Bimber, student at John Yeates Middle School, who was named the overall winner in the Letter Formation category for her writing titled "Lucy". Congratulations also to Janet Dildy (pictured), student from King's Fork High School, who won the Letter Strings category for her writing titled "Mikah." Suffolk Public Schools proudly celebrated the outstanding achievement of the Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School Music Department at the 2026 CFCMS Blue Ribbon Gala. 💙🎶

This special evening recognized the department’s excellence in Band, Orchestra, and Choral performance. The Virginia Music Education Association Blue Ribbon Award is the highest honor awarded to school music programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia and reflects the dedication, talent, and hard work of our students, educators, and families.
