There is a difference between administering a spanking and hitting your kids out of anger. I got spanked, never beaten. My father was never angry when he gave me an ass whooping. He was remorseful and did not like to do it, but it was necessary. He would always give me ample opportunity to confess, understand what I did wrong, and apologize. But like all kids I would LIE and try to manipulate my way out of trouble. But there was no wiggling out of that burn on my ass. Immediate, REAL consequences that actually hurt. It works. You're conflating people who administer discipline in the form of physical pain with people who get angry and violent. Two different things.
