The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) continues to lead in innovation and digital health, following the remarkable success of its student-led startup, Afya AI, at the Afriinovate Youth Challenge (AYC) finale held at Arusha Technical College.

Afya AI proudly secured 2nd place in this highly competitive event, where young innovators from across the country showcased impactful solutions to real-world challenges.

The MUHAS team impressed the judges with Afya AI, a telemedicine app powered by medical-grade AI, designed to help individuals detect, prevent, and manage hypertension and diabetes two of the leading NCDs in Tanzania and beyond.

Apart from this achievement, all 5 MUHAS innovation teams each won a seed award of USD 500, bringing home a total of USD 4,500 in support of their innovations.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire MUHAS innovation family and wish them continued success as they scale their solutions and create real-world health impact.

MUHAS Hosts KOICA Delegation to Explore Digital Health Collaboration in Tanzania.

The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), through its Digital Health Unit, received a courtesy visit from a delegation of experts from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the MUHAS Conference Hall. The visit aimed to explore opportunities for strengthening Tanzania’s digital health sector through a potential project planned for 2027.

Welcoming the KOICA team, the Acting MUHAS Vice Chancellor of MUHAS , Prof. Erasto V. Mbugi, expressed appreciation for KOICA’s commitment to support the digital health agenda in Tanzania. He assured the delegation that MUHAS, through its Digital Health Unit, will continue to collaborate closely with the government and partners to enhance digital health systems and is ready to work hand in hand with KOICA to improve healthcare delivery through technology.

During the meeting, Dr. Felix Sukums, Senior Lecturer at MUHAS and digital health consultant, highlighted the progress made in advancing digital health in Tanzania. Key achievements include Digitalization of all public sector hospitals through electronic health record systems, Implementation of integrated supply chain management systems, Establishment of health information exchange platforms, Digitalized health supply chain systems as well as Financial management systems (FFARS) currently used in over 28,000 public health facilities and schools.

Despite these milestones, Dr. Sukums pointed out several challenges that continue to hinder the full potential of digital health in Tanzania. These include suboptimal governance and coordination structures, limited harmonization of business processes across the sector, inadequate ICT infrastructure—especially in rural areas, a shortage of skilled health workers, low digital competencies among users, and limited capacity-building programs. Additionally, he noted that the utilization of data for decision-making remains suboptimal.

The KOICA delegation expressed their keen interest in understanding Tanzania’s digital health landscape, noting that the insights gathered from this formulation study will inform the design of a future project to advance digital health in the country.

The visit underscored MUHAS’s growing role as a key partner in shaping Tanzania’s digital health ecosystem and set the stage for strengthened collaboration between MUHAS and KOICA in driving digital transformation in healthcare.

Uthibitisho huo umefanyika leo Mei 28, 2025 kwenye kikao cha 157 cha Kamati tendaji kilichofanyika Geneva Uswisi.

Sasa ni rasmi Prof. Janabi anaanza kutekeleza majukumu yake Julai Mosi 2025 akiwa Mtanzania wa pili kushika nyadhifa hiyo, akitanguliwa na Marehemu Dkt. Faustine Ndugulile aliyefariki kabla kuanza kutekeleza majukumu yake.

Ushindi huu wa kishindo wa Prof. Janabi ni mwendelezo wa uthibitisho wa ukuaji wa Diplomasia ya Taifa la Tanzania kukubalika Kimataifa chini ya Uongozi mahiri wa Rais wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania Dkt. Samia Suluhu Hassan pamoja na kuwa na wataalam wenye sifa stahiki kuongoza Mashirikia ya Kimataifa.

Ikumbukwe kuwa Prof. Janabi alishinda kwa kishindo uchaguzi uliofanyika Mei 18, 2025 kwa kuwabwaga mbali wagombea wenza kwa kura za ndio 32 kati ya 47 zilizopigwa katika raundi ya kwanza hivyo kuweka historia ya kuwa mgombea aliyeshinda katika raundi ya kwanza ya uchaguzi huo.
