Bitcoin is down 31% and gold has fallen 7% in the first half of 2026, making them the two worst-performing major assets so far this year, an unprecedented divergence despite accelerating money creation.

Meanwhile, U.S. M2 surged $247.8 billion in May to a record $23.1 trillion, the largest monthly increase since May 2021.

Year-to-date, M2 has expanded $698.6 billion, the biggest January-May increase in five years, leaving the money supply $1.3 trillion above its March 2022 peak.

Is this the end of the debasement trade, or a temporary disconnect before Bitcoin and gold begin absorbing the surge in new liquidity?
