A small 24-week study in 87 older adults in Korea tested a 3-strain probiotic vs placebo. One blood marker moved, a more specific one didn't, and memory results were mixed. An early clue, not proof. What it can and can't tell you: https://t.co/uQIltAprg6

Scientists and retailers are turning against Antarctic krill oil. Switching? Fish and algae oils also give EPA and DHA, and krill capsules often carry less. Compare EPA+DHA on the label, ask your clinician, and test your omega-3 index.

Are supplements a scam? A viral list says only 5 work. We checked: creatine has the strongest evidence (with training), and vitamin D, magnesium and zinc matter most if you're low. Test first (ask your clinician). For D: 25(OH)D.

A vegetarian's B12 test came back at 83 pg/mL and went viral. Vegans, metformin users and older adults are at higher risk, and a "normal" result can mislead. Here's what to test.

Collagen for glowing skin? Independent, high-quality trials found no skin effect. It may ease knee joint pain a little, whey beat it for muscle, and there's no human evidence for hair or gut.

Milk thistle as a liver "detox" or hangover fix? No human trials show either. It may nudge ALT a bit in fatty liver, but it didn't reverse it in 48-week biopsy trials. Weight loss and diet do far more.

"Lactoferrin cut 8x more belly fat than placebo"? The math checks out, but it's one 26-person, 8-week trial run by the tablet maker, never repeated. Its stronger evidence is iron status.

"7.5 years younger brain" from magnesium L-threonate? That figure is a 2.24-point test gap converted into years, not a brain-age scan. 100 adults, 6 weeks, maker-funded.

Low ferritin? Iron can help if you're actually low, but more isn't better. Calcium and tea do cut absorption, yet a 440-person trial found iron alone worked as well as iron + vitamin C. For hair, iron only helps when stores are low. Test before you take it.

A gummy, a tablet, and a scoop are not the same dose.
The form decides whether that amount fits, and whether one piece matches the label. A patch is not a supplement.

Triglycerides are not LDL. High readings raise heart risk; at about 500 mg/dL and up, pancreatitis risk climbs. Fish oil can lower TG in trials — but OTC softgels are not the same as prescription EPA from REDUCE-IT. Ask your clinician.

LDL-C counts cholesterol; ApoB counts particles. In pooled trials, psyllium and plant sterols were linked to modest LDL drops. Red yeast rice drops more but contains a statin-like compound. Ask your clinician.

Berberine isn't "Nature's Ozempic." It's a plant compound, not a GLP-1 drug. Trials show modest, mixed changes; a 2026 trial saw no visceral or liver fat change. Ask a clinician first.

Before you toss the melatonin gummies: some of the viral warning is backed by data, some isn't.
Real: labels are often off (74%–347% of stated dose) + rising kid ingestions.
Unproven: the "heart failure" claim is from an adult, non-peer-reviewed abstract.
Ask your pediatrician.

Thinking about a potassium pill? Food usually does the heavy lifting.
Most US adults eat less than the recommended 2,600 mg (women) / 3,400 mg (men). Research suggests higher potassium intake is linked to lower blood pressure, mainly in people with hypertension.
But OTC supplements are usually capped around 99 mg, and potassium can be risky with kidney disease or ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and some diuretics. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Careful with this one. "Optimal" bands like TSH under 2.0 or vitamin D 50–80 aren't guideline cutoffs. In the TRUST trial (NEJM 2017, 737 adults 65+, TSH 4.6–20), levothyroxine gave no symptom or tiredness benefit. In VITAL (NEJM 2019, 25,871 adults), 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D didn't reduce cancer or heart events. Labs need context, so talk to your doctor.
TRUST: https://t.co/SJnabVZg3f: https://t.co/TwkIu3swac
Three caveats:
TRUST scope: It covered older adults with persistently high TSH, so it doesn't speak to healthy younger adults. That's why the draft says "65+".
VITAL scope: Its endpoints were cancer and heart events, not immune function, so it doesn't directly disprove the "immune function drops" claim. I worded it as "didn't reduce cancer or heart events" to stay accurate.
Ferritin: I left it out. I found the WHO 2020 ferritin guideline (https://t.co/yQ27LDAK3m), but its abstract doesn't give the cutoffs, so I didn't quote numbers I haven't verified. I can pull the full text and add a ferritin line if you want.
Fermented garlic honey is trending as a "natural antibiotic." Food-safety experts are not convinced.
Oregon State Extension: honey is safe because of low water activity, not acidity. Garlic is wet and low-acid, its highest-risk ingredient for honey infusions. Health Canada warns room-temperature garlic in honey can risk botulism.
Never give honey to babies under 1.
