#JimmyLai is the highest-profile political prisoner in the world. He suffers in a Hong Kong prison for standing up for his beliefs.
President Trump has been called the "Liberator-in-Chief." Another historic act could cement that legacy.
If anyone can get Jimmy Lai out...@POTUS can. #FreeJimmyLai
In his prison cell, Jimmy Lai sketches the Crucifixion in colored pencil. Nearly six years in solitary confinement, his faith has not broken.

At his May summit in Beijing, President #Trump made an effort to convince Chinese leader Xi Jinping to release #JimmyLai from his imprisonment in Hong Kong. Jimmy, whom I am honored to call a friend, is a 78-year-old diabetic who has been in solitary confinement some seven hundred days longer than the United States was engaged in World War II and is now serving a twenty-year sentence for threatening Chinese national security. That conviction has no more legal or moral validity than that of the Lord by Pontius Pilate. And I find it deeply moving that, in the prison cell where Jimmy does colored pencil sketches of religious scenes, many of them depict the Crucifixion; one of those sketches is among my most prized possessions. By conforming himself in prayer to the crucified Lord, Jimmy Lai is living his unjust punishment as an occasion of grace. https://t.co/iNZZOxVK2P #commentary #Blog #FaithBlog
The man in these photos is a father, an entrepreneur, and a defender of a free press. His name is #JimmyLai.
For nearly six years, he has been held in solitary confinement for defending democracy. At 78 years old with deteriorating health, he doesn't have much time left.
He deserves to come home.

History remembers the people who refused to stay silent. Jimmy is one of them.
He denounced Chinese communism, defended the rule of law, and gave Hong Kong a free press, knowing exactly what it would cost him.

Every June 4 as a boy, Sebastien Lai held a candle beside his father in Hong Kong's Victoria Park, remembering Tiananmen. Those vigils are banned now, and his father, Jimmy, sits in solitary confinement at 78.

Today marks 37 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre. In 2020, Jimmy Lai was arrested for attending a vigil for victims of the massacre. Jimmy Lai is currently in prison for advocating for freedom in Hong Kong. @SupportJimmyLai#FreeJimmyLai https://t.co/qFtfAPpW0R
Today marks 37 years since the Tiananmen Square massacre. Its ripple effects continue.
It was a lightning rod for Jimmy Lai: the moment when his career shifted from fashion to journalism and defending democracy.
In 1989, Jimmy Lai helped fund a rescue network that carried many protesters and dissidents to safety. One of them was Arthur Liu, a student leader on Beijing's "most wanted" list. Liu fled to Hong Kong and eventually made it to America, where he built a new life. This year, his daughter Alysa won Olympic gold for Team USA.
Jimmy Lai gave others their freedom. Today, he has spent nearly 6 years in prison for defending Hong Kong's freedom.

Today is the anniversary of Tiananmen Square.
Jimmy Lai once lit a candle and said a prayer to mark it. He was sentenced to over a year in prison for that alone.
Now 78 and in ailing health, Lai has been held in prolonged solitary confinement since 2020.
In February, he was sentenced to 20 years under Hong Kong's National Security Law—an effective death sentence.
All for publishing a newspaper that criticized the Chinese Communist Party. And refusing to stop.

"One of the sentences he got was for for lighting a candle and saying a prayer at a Tiananmen Square vigil, to commemorate the people who died there in 1989. More than a year for that."

My new op-ed out on the anniversary of #China's #Tiananmen massacre
We must remember #JimmyLai "who is now serving a 20-year sentence but has already served time in jail for the crime of lighting a candle to commemorate Tiananmen." #FreeJimmyLai
"We must also remember the courageous Hong Kong barrister Chow Hang-tung, who has spent the past five years in jail and is currently on trial for commemorating the Tiananmen massacre, along with the remarkable trade unionist Lee Cheuk-yan. Today, even lighting a candle in Hong Kong on June 4 is unlawful."
"...when you take the evidence of the China Tribunal, together with the subsequent Uyghur Tribunal, as well as numerous reports on the human rights crisis in Tibet, the persecution of Christians, the repression of dissidents over the past three decades or more, and the dismantling of Hong Kong’s promised freedoms, you find a CCP state that lives up to the values it exhibited in Tiananmen Square in June 4, 1989: barbarity, inhumanity, criminality, murder, torture, and — in some specific instances — crimes against humanity and genocide. That criminal regime is still in power in Beijing today. And it should be held to account."

.@marcorubio recently explained the urgency of Jimmy Lai's case, given his health and age:
"We would like to see him released. The President's made that point publicly and in other meetings. We hope the Chinese system will be responsive to that, and we'd be open to any arrangement that would work for them, as long as he's given his freedom. It's really at this point a humanitarian situation because of his age and health."

"In the offices of Apple Daily there used to be a banner.
It said: 'Colleagues, you've worked hard.' And indeed they did.
But perhaps today I can take the opportunity to say: Daddy, you've worked hard.
I too believe there are some worthy but impossible fights.
Securing your freedom, however, is both worthy and possible."
