THOUGHTS: I feel like we’ve reached a point where people care about everything in a video game EXCEPT gameplay🚀

Everyone wants their values affirmed and validated, regardless of side; everyone wants a game tailored to their ideological preference, and so many games are supremely elevated or criminally put down merely based on these aspects, rather than any genuine love for the fun factor and gameplay.

It’s like people want to prove a point by playing sometime, rather than actually enjoying playing it…

People keep fighting over why Assassin’s Creed Shadows has a black lead or why Stellar Blade has a hot female protagonist or why one game is “pushing/not pushing” an “agenda”.

Even creators have began to deliberately make things that low-key triggers one side or the other just to bait for outrage that creates free marketing for their games, that are more often than not, quite hollow and have no redeeming values other than the controversy surrounding them.

I hardly see anyone discuss gameplay anymore or how average stories are or how mechanics are hardly evolving or even any real push about value for money and actual technological advancement.

People get one souls-like game or one depressive story and that’s it, all standards disappear “Yay! Best thing ever! Who cares if it has glitches? Who cares if it looks 2 generations behind?”

With each new game from any franchise, we get a host of excuses and missed opportunities, but somehow we should be grateful and happy that this game’s studio “Ditched Sweet Baby Inc” or “Accurately represented X aspect”, all while the prices keep rising and the quality of everything else keeps dipping.

I genuinely miss the days when we just popped in a disc, played the game and either enjoyed it or ignored it for what it was, without knowing or caring what dev said what in which interview or who the company supports or does not support or what social media is saying about the game so that we follow through to support or oppose because God forbids anybody has any original thinking.

It had to be one side or the other with assumptions being made about your whole character and affiliation based on whether you like The Last of Us – Part II or Stellar Blade or if you’re hyped for Dragon Age or Elden Ring.

Every few days, the whole gaming space clings to one story and drags it to astronomical proportions like their lives depend on it, when in reality they don’t care. It’s just bait for more free marketing through fake outrage. Neither corporations or journalists or your favorite bloggers/YouTubers genuinely care about any of issues they spam you about. You can rest assured of that.

There’s too much noise that there’s hardly any room for a genuine push for better games, and people blame Sony and Microsoft for missing out on this gen, when players are just to blame for caring about everything BUT the actual quality of games.

At point, I feel like people who care too much about issues that are irrelevant to gameplay/tech, should better be encouraged to go make their own video games that match their ideology instead of demanding everything to be done their way, or else guilt tripping everyone else for liking what they don’t like.
