What does it mean to โwork in sustainability?โ We spoke with @prAna Sustainability and Innovation Manager, Ellen Johnson, to find out. ๐โจ
For a second year in a row, the Surfrider Foundation and prAna are partnering around our shared commitment to protecting the natural environments that inspire us to get outside โ whether through surfing, hiking, climbing, or simply connecting with nature.
As Ellen shared with us, โprAna was founded on an ethos rooted in sustainabilityโฆ the founders decided they wanted to use their business as a platform for positive change.โ That ethos continues to guide prAna today, helping set the standard for what it means to lead with purpose and environmental responsibility. ๐
Our conversation with Ellen offers a behind-the-scenes look at prAnaโs stewardship and thoughtful decision-making, exploring how conscious collaboration can drive even greater impact in protecting our ocean, waves, and beaches.

โSurfrider has a history of successfully driving change through public policy. Coastal conservation efforts would not have come as far as they have without the community engagement that Surfrider leads.โ
Rani Crosby is the President of the Surfrider Student Club at UC San Diego ๐ First getting involved with the South Bay Chapterโs Blue Water Task Force in 7th grade, Rani has grown from student lab director to building an entirely new Surfrider community on her college campus โ creating a space for UCSD students passionate about coastal conservation to connect, learn, and take action.

Surfrider Maui Chapter shows us what resilience looks like โ๐
In the aftermath of the 2023 Lahaina wildfires, Surfrider Maui Chapter launched a coastal water quality monitoring program to answer the question their community was asking over and over again: โIs it safe to swim yet?โ
Testing for fecal bacteria, heavy metals, and other fire-related contaminants, the chapter was able to confirm that West Mauiโs coastal waters were safe for ocean recreation and help their community return to the water safely.
Recovery is also taking root on land. So far, through their Ocean Friendly Gardens program, Surfrider Maui Chapter has:
๐ Created a Fire-Resilient Landscape Guide for Lahaina & West Maui
๐ฑ Planted 3,000 native trees and plants to protect Honolua Bay
๐ค Partnered with local schools and community gardens to grow the next generation of watershed stewards

Weโd like to give a HUGE thanks to everyone who participated in the Paddle Out to Protect Our Coast last weekend at Refugio State Beach.
This event raised public awareness and engagement related to the critical threat of new offshore oil drilling โ at the same beach where the Plains All-American oil spill occurred 11 years ago.
The Trump administration will be releasing a revised offshore drilling plan any day. Once that happens, we will then have 90 days to submit public comments and make our voices heard. This will be our final opportunity to speak up and take action to prevent more oil spills, like the one that devastated Santa Barbaraโs coast in 2015.

Surfriderโs 2025 Beach Bacteria Hot Spots ๐ฆ ๐
Is your beach making you sick? Surfriderโs Blue Water Task Force has identified 10 beach bacteria hot spots across the U.S where high bacteria levels are consistently measuredโputting swimmers, surfers, and families at serious risk.
Each location regularly shows dangerous levels of fecal-indicator bacteria tied to human illnesses, including gastrointestinal issues, flu-like symptoms, and serious skin conditions like MRSA and staph infections.
The Surfrider chapters testing these sites are working urgently in their communities to alert the public about these health hazards and advocate for solutions to stormwater runoff, failing sewage infrastructure, and other contributing sources of pollution.

Hot off the press: Surfriderโs 2025 Clean Water Report is here! ๐๐
From coast to coast, Surfrider volunteers are making huge waves in the fight for clean water, and this year was our biggest yet.
๐งช 10,157 water samples tested
๐ 620 unique sampling sites monitored
๐ฌ 60 Blue Water Task Force labs in action
Our Blue Water Task Force water quality monitoring program โ the largest volunteer-run beach water testing program in the country โ broke records, expanded our reach, and provided vital water quality information to help keep you and your family safe at the beach. There was also growing momentum for the Ocean Friendly Gardens program across Surfriderโs chapter network in 2025, with several exciting new projects and community partnerships established.
And weโre not stopping there. Surfrider is advocating for policies at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure our ocean and coasts are clean and safe for all people to enjoy.

Hawaiiโs water looks pristine. The data tells a different story. ๐
Surfriderโs Blue Water Task Force tests the spots most beach programs donโt โ the streams where kids play, the waterways locals and tourists wade through and surf every day. In this episode, Mara Dias shares what theyโve been finding in Hawaii, and why checking water quality should be as routine as checking the swell before you head out.
