NOUN Begins 5-Year Strategic Plan Retreat, VC Says ODL is Future of Tertiary Education
The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, has said the conventional method of instructional delivery is no longer feasible if the goal is to expand access to tertiary education in Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the opening of a retreat for the development of NOUN’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma said many conventional universities that once doubted the Open and Distance Learning, ODL, model are now adopting it.
“The conventional method of instructional delivery is no more feasible if expansion of access to tertiary education is the focus,” he stated.
“A lot of conventional universities in the country who earlier did not believe in the ODL model today are going the ODL way.”
The VC described the retreat as more than “another administrative activity,” saying it was an opportunity to critically reflect on where the University is today and agree on pathways, priorities and measurable actions for the next five years.
He urged participants to build consensus around a compelling future for NOUN.
“Let us envision a University with excellent teaching and learning, robust digital systems, responsive learner support services, highly skilled and motivated staff, impactful research and innovation, strong quality assurance mechanisms, a respected national and international reputation, employable and globally competitive graduates, sustainable finances, productive partnerships and functional, modern and well-maintained infrastructure,” he emphasised.
Prof. Uduma said the Strategic Plan is woven around the Six-Point Agenda of his administration and must translate policy priorities into clear objectives, programmes, initiatives, performance indicators and measurable outcomes.
He directed that the final document should include specific strategic objectives, activities, timelines, responsible units and measurable outcomes against which Management, Council and other stakeholders can assess performance.
“We should develop clear Key Performance Indicators and realistic targets,” he added. “If you don’t do your job with some passion, you’ll not succeed.”
The VC also pledged commitment to staff welfare, noting that it should be one of the priority areas for the retreat.
“I’ve promised to promote staff welfare and I am aware it is one of the most difficult enterprises for any Chief Executive due to paucity of funds.
“No matter how well-intentioned you are, it is dependent on the availability of funds. Our welfare policy will be tailored on what will be sustainable. Except one is a sadist, no Chief Executive will not prioritise staff welfare. Whatever that will make the system work, I’ll do it. Whatever that is right, I’ll do.”
The four-day retreat is expected to produce a roadmap to reposition and strengthen NOUN as Africa’s leading ODL institution.
🚀 PI NETWORK — NEW DEVELOPER TOOLS ARE HERE!
🟣 BUILD. INTEGRATE. LAUNCH.
Pi is expanding the tools available to developers building on Pi! 🔥
✨ NEW DEVELOPER CAPABILITIES
💾 LOCAL STORAGE SUPPORT
Whitelisted Pi Browser apps can now store certain data directly on a Pioneer’s device, helping reduce backend infrastructure needs while keeping locally stored data on the device.
📊 STAKING DATA API
Developers can access app-specific effective staking data, taking into account both the amount of Pi staked and the duration-based boost.
📁 FILE & VIDEO SHARING
With Pi.shareFile, developers can enable users to share files, images, and videos directly through their device’s native sharing functionality.
📚 NEW DEVELOPER DOCUMENTATION
Pi has launched a unified developer documentation destination, bringing technical resources together and creating a clearer journey:
GET STARTED → REGISTER → SANDBOX → INTEGRATE → MAINNET → LAUNCH 🚀
🤖 The documentation also includes AI-assisted guidance for authentication and payments integration.
🌐 WHY IT MATTERS
These updates give developers more building blocks while reducing practical barriers to creating and maintaining applications in the Pi ecosystem.
More tools + better documentation = easier development + more utility. 💜
🔥 THE PI ECOSYSTEM IS BUILDING.
Today, I celebrate my dear wife, Erelu Abeni Ngozi Adeleke, on the occasion of her birthday.
I celebrate you for all you do, a compassionate mother, a woman of service, and a partner whose strength, prayers and unwavering support have been invaluable to me and our family.
I am grateful to Almighty God for the gift of your life and for the many lives you continue to touch through your humanitarian work with the Esther Adeleke Humanitarian Foundation, as well as your commitment to women, the vulnerable and community development.
May God bless you with good health, abundant joy and many more beautiful years. May your light continue to shine brightly, and may you continue to be a blessing to our family and humanity.
Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis just reminded us what this project is really about. 💚
His words: "We are not trying to build a quick pump and dump cryptocurrency here. That would be easier but we are not interested in that."
He said it years ago. And he's still right today.
Key takeaways from his message:
🔹 "It takes time to build things right." Pi Network is building infrastructure for the next 10–20 years, not the next 20 minutes.
🔹 "It takes time to build a strong community of people." 60M+ users, 18M+ KYC-verified, 421K+ nodes. That doesn't happen overnight.
🔹 "It takes time to build an ecosystem." DEX, Launchpad, smart contracts, PiVerify, SoloHost, RoboPay. These are not copy-paste projects.
🔹 "We are trying to create a long-term, sustainable ecosystem." Not a pump and dump. Not a quick exit. A real economy.
The journey is long. The vision is bigger. And the foundation is being built for generations, not just quick gains. 🌱
What keeps you committed to the long-term vision of Pi Network? 😃
Today, I join my Muslim brothers and sisters across Osun State and beyond to celebrate Eid-ul-Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
I deeply appreciate your prayers, support and goodwill throughout our just-concluded electoral journey. As Nurudeen, the light of Osun, I am reminded once again that leadership must be guided by peace, compassion, forgiveness and service to humanity.
As we move beyond the election, I call on all of us to forgive our persecutors, heal our wounds and reject division. Let us resuscitate the Osun we all desire; a state where we live peacefully, worship freely and prosper together.
May the virtues of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) continue to guide us, and may Allah bless the Muslim Ummah, Osun State and Nigeria with enduring peace, unity and prosperity. Amin
Today, I received the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim D. Zungura, who paid a courtesy visit to me as he assumes duty in Osun State.
I welcomed his commitment to impartial policing, peace and stability, especially at a time when our state is working to fully restore post-election peace and reconciliation. I assured him that our administration is ready to support the police without any strings attached. What we seek is fair policing.
To consolidate peace and rebuild public confidence, I made five specific requests to the new CP:
1. Rebuild public trust in the police by ensuring that police conduct is professional, impartial and people-oriented.
2. Strengthen cooperation between the state government and police command, based on mutual respect, the rule of law and fair policing.
3. Reorganise the internal operations of the command and address units that have been compromised or perceived as partisan.
4. Ensure full police participation in the State Security Council meetings to strengthen security coordination across the state.
5. Release those arrested and held as political detainees, while putting an end to further politically motivated arrests.
Osun deserves peace. Osun deserves justice. Osun deserves a police command that enjoys the confidence of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
I extend an olive branch to all stakeholders. Let us work together to heal our state, rebuild trust and give peace a permanent home in Osun
