Thank you to everyone who shared a case study and made #BefriendingWeek 2024 so special! Our final case study comes from @_bfriend and tells the story of Shane and Sue, who found friendship after losing close family members.

Shane and Sue met through b:friend over two years ago. After Sue lost her husband and Shane’s grandmother passed away, they were both looking for a meaningful connection – and found friendship in an unexpected place.

Although Sue attended a bereavement support group and her family encouraged her to get out more, she said she felt it didn’t help, so she used to stay in a lot. She said the befriending with Shane was just what she needed:

“I just needed somebody different... I really enjoyed the fact it was different. It's happened to be a new life to me. I've never done this before and, you know, I've been 58 years really in my own little world, and I've come out of it, and it's different and it's nice.”

Shane was paired with Sue after seeing an advert on Facebook and his match hasn't been what he expected!

“I remember coming around the first day and I expected a shy, retiring elderly woman, maybe watching The Chase on an evening, and it's certainly not what I've got! But we're very happy, aren't we? I think we suit.”

This is National #Befriending week and @befriendingnet is holding its Annual Conference tomorrow to reflect on the year past and look to the future of befriending in Scotland.

The charity receives @ScotGov funding towards its work to promote wellbeing and meaningful connections.

Did you know it's #BefriendingWeek? Befrienders are volunteers who offer support and friendship to people who might feel socially excluded or isolated. 👫

At Share, we offer a befriending service to our students. Once matched with a befriender, students meet up with them regularly to hang out and explore the local area. This could mean going for a walk in the park, grabbing a coffee, having dinner at a restaurant, or even doing some grocery shopping together. It’s all about building connections, having fun, and feeling part of the community. To find out more about this project, head over to our website and click 'What We Do'.
