The mustangs of North America were abandoned on the range when the western tribes were forced onto the reservations. They are not 'wild' and they are no more native to this continent that cattle or sheep.
They are livestock animals.
That said, I enjoy seeing them as a remnant of our old west.
For the mustangs to remain, we must manage them like any other livestock. Most young colts/fillies should be brought in and trained for use as affordable ranch/outfitter/trail horses. Most adults should be neutered, until a sustainable population remains. And during times of drought, more of them need to be brought in.
Allowing them to die around dried up water holes on denuded ranges is not kind and not responsible.

Over 20 years of marriage. Six deployments—for Kristie, that meant countless sleepless nights, never knowing if I would make it home, and at times raising our children alone as a strong Army wife.
