Has Gold Peaked? Why Equities May Still Be Your Best Bet
Gold has always held a special place for Indian investors, especially during festivals and the wedding season. Its recent crossover of ₹1 lakh, and continued hovering around the same price range, has only strengthened its reputation as a safe haven. But if we look at history, gold tends to rise fast in short bursts and then stay stagnant for long periods.
We could be entering one of those stagnant phases now.
Yes, gold has given solid 5-year returns of ~14% CAGR. But equities have done much better at ~26%. And with global uncertainty receding, including easing geopolitical tensions and Trump tariff wars, the central banks are likely to slow their gold buying. The rising manufacturing OPEX costs will limit new supply as well.
Equities, on the other hand, will continue to benefit from strong earnings, innovation and growing investor participation. They remain the better long-term bet for wealth creation. While gold is slightly less volatile than equities, it still carries some risk. Over 15 years, its annualised volatility ~15% is only slightly lower than equities ~17%, making it more unpredictable than fixed-income investments.
No doubt, gold remains a valuable hedge. But if you’re investing for growth, equities are where the action is!
