🚨 NORTH HERTS LABOUR COUNCILLOR & FINANCE VICE-CHAIR CAUGHT IN TAX AVOIDANCE SCANDAL.

A Labour councillor entrusted with scrutinising council finances has stepped down from #NorthHertfordshireCouncil’s Finance, Audit & Risk Committee following a landmark Court of Appeal ruling against a company in which she holds a substantial ownership interest.

Cllr Sarah Lucas (Royston Palace, North Herts) is a director of Principled Offsite Logistics Ltd (POLL) and owns 50% of its controlling parent company, POLL Holdings Ltd.

❓ What does POLL do?

The company places boxes into EMPTY commercial properties to help landlords avoid paying business rates. This form of tax avoidance is known as “box-shifting”.

By temporarily filling otherwise vacant premises with literal boxes, landlords can claim that their buildings were “occupied”, then seek fresh periods of empty-property rates relief.

💰 The company claims to have “saved” clients a shocking £500 MILLION in business rates.

Following a legal challenge, the Court of Appeal ruled that placing boxes in empty properties to secure rates relief did NOT amount to genuine occupation.

The Government subsequently advised councils across England to review similar arrangements and withdraw relief where the legal requirements had not been met.

Lucas has now resigned as vice-chair and member of the committee – yet REMAINS a councillor for Royston Palace.

❌ Stepping down from a committee isn’t enough. We call on Councillor Lucas to resign from the council ENTIRELY.
