Raising unwanted historical controversies to cover up the present day crisis has been converted into a Machiavellian trick by Modi Govt and the BJP.

It is the same now with our proud National Song, “VANDE MATARAM”.

VANDE MATARAM evokes our National fervour, it represents our sense of pride. It is not imposed or forced. It makes us proud. But, Modi Govt seeks to use it also for furthering its myopic and divisive political agendas.

While Facts are sacrosanct, they need to be reiterated -:

1. On 28th December, 1896, Vande Mataram was first sung at Calcutta Session of Congress Party by Babu Rabindranath Tagore.

2. In October 1937, Congress Working Committee passed a Resolution recognizing the song, “VANDE MATARAM” for its deep association with Freedom Movement and singing of its first two stanzas.

BJP-RSS had nothing to do with it. BJP asked for full recitation of Vande Mataram only in June 2006 in its Dehradun Session - full 110 Years after Congress Party sang ‘Vande Mataram’ in its Calcutta Session.

3. On 24th January, 1950, the Constituent Assembly, after long debates, decided unanimously to adopt the first two Stanzas of “Vande Mataram”

4. Adoption of two Stanzas of “Vande Mataram” was the decision of Mahatama Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore.

It was accepted by all including Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhash Chander Bose & Baba Saheb Ambedakar. The entire Constituent Assembly agreed.

5. By passing the Insults to National Honour Bill, 2026 in Parliament in din and attempting to punish people, Modi Govt seeks to undermine the very ethos and spirit that Vande Mataram represents.

Yes, all stanzas will now be played. Yes, that is the law.

BUT, let everyone think.

Should it be at the cost of India’s unifying pluralistic edifice, rooted in Freedom Movement, accepted on the wisdom of Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore or should it be turned over on the whims of Modi-Shah?
