EU Foreign Ministers have adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex, the largest single expansion of the EU sanctions list since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. More than half target supply chains involved in the production of ballistic missiles.

🇸🇪 Sweden stands firmly behind this united EU effort to restrict Russia’s ability to produce weapons and sustain its war against Ukraine.

Supporting Ukraine is not only vital for its survival and reconstruction, but also for Sweden’s own security.

Sweden will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. 💙💛

🇸🇪👨‍🚀 Thanks to Saab, Dr. Christer Fuglesang, Sweden’s first astronaut, visited Thailand last year to promote space dialogue, academic exchange and international collaboration🚀🔬🤝

🎓 🔭 🌌 During his visit, Dr. Fuglesang delivered a public lecture, sharing insights into life aboard the International Space Station, cutting-edge space science and research into space-based sunshades for climate mitigation at both Bangkok Planetarium and Chulalongkorn University ☀️ 🎤

🤝 He exchanged ideas with leading physics researchers at Chulalongkorn University and engaged with key Thai and Swedish stakeholders, including GISTDA, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) and the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), strengthening opportunities for scientific exchange and cooperation. 🇹🇭🇸🇪🚀🛰️

Esrange Space Center – a gateway to space in northern Sweden! (English below) 🚀✨

Connecting perspectives on Asia’s economic outlook (English below)

As economic and geopolitical developments continue to shape the global outlook, dialogue and regional perspectives are essential to understanding the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Today, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok hosted a lunch at the Swedish Ambassador’s Residence, bringing together Mr Erik Thedéen, Governor of the Central Bank of Sweden (Riksbank), and Thai economists and researchers for an insightful discussion on Asia’s economic outlook and the wider geopolitical dynamics influencing the region.

Strengthening Sweden–Thailand ties 🇸🇪🇹🇭 (English below)

เมื่อวันที่ 14 ตุลาคม สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดงานเลี้ยงรับรอง ณ ทำเนียบเอกอัครราชทูตสวีเดน เ��ื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่คณะผู้แทนระดับสูงของสวีเดนที่เข้าร่วมการประชุมประจำปี 2026 ของกองทุนการเงินระหว่างประเทศ (IMF) และกลุ่มธนาคารโลก (World Bank Group) ที่กรุงเทพฯ โดยผู้เข้าร่วมงานประกอบด้วย ผู้ว่าการธนาคารกลางสวีเดน Erik Thedéen State Secretary Johanna Lybeck กระทรวงการคลัง และอธิบดีกรมความร่วมมือเพื่อการพัฒนาระหว่างประเทศ Camilla Nevstad Bruzelius) กระทรวงการต่างประเทศสวีเดน

On 14 October, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok was pleased to host a reception at the Swedish Ambassador’s Residence in honour of the Swedish high-level delegation attending the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok. Attending the reception was the Governor of the Central Bank of Sweden Erik Thedéen, State Secretary Johanna Lybeck from the Ministry of Finance, and Director-General for International Development Cooperation Camilla Nevstad Bruzelius from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Following welcoming remarks by the Ambassador of Sweden, the three distinguished guests shared their reflections on the Annual Meetings and their perspectives on the global economic outlook, financial stability, economic growth and international development cooperation.

The conversation also addressed emerging challenges, including artificial intelligence, rising public debt and energy security, as well as continued support for Ukraine.
The reception brought together representatives from the Swedish Government, agencies, international and financial institutions, businesses, civil society, academics and friends of Sweden.

🌍 The reception was an opportunity to exchange ideas and reaffirm the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
Sweden remains committed to constructive dialogue and strong multilateral institutions like IMF and World Bank.

While these annual meetings focus on multilateral cooperation, it also offers an opportunity for the delegates to learn more about Thailand and explore the many ways our two countries work together.

On 14 October, Swedish Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson took part in the 10thUkraine Ministerial Roundtable during the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, joining international financial institutions and government leaders to discuss how to sustain Ukraine’s economy, strengthen its resilience and support its recovery and reconstruction.

Sweden’s support for Ukraine is long-standing. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Sweden has provided around SEK 156 billion in military and civilian support (as of August 2026). This includes humanitarian assistance, economic support, and contributions to reconstruction, civil resilience and reform efforts.

Through its participation in the roundtable, Sweden reaffirms its commitment to standing alongside Ukraine and working with international partners to strengthen the country’s resilience, support its recovery and reconstruction, and advance a just and lasting peace in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. 🇸🇪🤝🇺🇦

🌱 เราจะใช้ประโยชน์จากพื้นที่และโครงสร้างที่มีอยู่แล้วในเมืองให้คุ้มค่ามากขึ้นได้อย่างไร?

หนึ่งในคำตอบสามารถพบได้ที่กรมควบคุมมลพิษ กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม-ประเ��ศไทย ซึ่งทางเ��ินมีหลังคาแห่งหนึ่งได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงศักยภาพของแผงโซลาร์เซลล์ของ Midsummer ที่มีน้ำหนักเบา ยืดหยุ่น และสามารถรีไซเคิลได้ 🇹🇭

🌱 How can cities make better use of the spaces and structures they already have?

One answer can be found at the Pollution Control Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Bangkok, where a covered walkway demonstrates the potential of lightweight, flexible and recyclable Midsummer solar panels. 🇹🇭

♻️ Unlike conventional rigid glass panels, these thin, lightweight and flexible solar panels offer new ways to integrate solar energy into existing structures. Made from 63% recycled materials and designed to be 98% recyclable, they sit on a roof made from PolyAl, a recycled material recovered from Tetra Pak packaging. 🧃🌍

⚡ The walkway is expected to produce 5,805 kWh of electricity annually helping power lighting and air conditioning in the Department’s building.

A practical example of how Swedish innovation can make existing infrastructure part of the shift towards clean energy. 💚

Sweden and Thailand strengthen climate cooperation ahead of COP31 (English below)

As world leaders, policymakers, and financial institutions gather for the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, Sweden's Director-General for Climate Action and Head of the Climate Division at the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, Mr. Patrik Brodd accompanied by Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok, took the opportunity to meet with Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of Thailand's Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), and his team in Bangkok.

During the meeting the two sides exchanged perspectives on climate policy, preparations for COP31, and opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation on the green transition.

Building on the strong foundation of the Sweden-Thailand Strategic Partnership, signed in 2025, the discussions focused on implementing national climate commitments and exploring new avenues for collaboration in support of Thailand's net-zero ambition by 2050.

🤝🏽🏡 On 5 October 2026, the Embassy of Sweden welcomed participants of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) Forum to the Residence in Bangkok for an evening reception hosted in collaboration with the World Childhood Foundation and Swedish partners working to prevent violence against women and children.

🌏👥 The gathering brought together researchers, practitioners, civil society organizations, policymakers, and international partners from across the world who have come to Bangkok to advance evidence, dialogue, and action on preventing gender-based violence and child exploitation.

🇸🇪⚖️ Sweden has long placed gender equality and the protection of women and children at the centre of its engagement, both nationally and internationally, and Thailand has been one of the World Childhood Foundation’s longest-standing partner countries.

🤝 During 8–9 October 2026, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok hosted a Consular Conference bringing together Honorary Consuls and consular assistants from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, as well as the head of the Swedish Office in Taiwan. The two-day meeting provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss day-to-day consular operations, address common challenges and strengthen consular assistance. 🛡️

🌍 Honorary Consuls play an important role in Sweden’s international presence. From promoting trade and cultural exchange to assisting Swedish citizens abroad, they help strengthen Sweden’s connections with local communities. Most recently, they also supported the Embassy of advance voting for Swedish elections in their respective territories. 🗳️

📍 Did you know that the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations provides the international legal framework for consular functions. It outlines responsibilities such as protecting national interests, fostering international relations and assisting citizens abroad? 📖

7 ตุลาคม วันรณรงค์ตระห��ักรู้โรคมะเร็งเต้านมโลก (World Breast Cancer Awareness Day) เอกอัครราชทูต Anna Hammargren ได้ร่วมเป็นสักขีพยานในพิธีลงนามบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MoU) ระหว่าง Elekta บริษัทเทคโนโลยีด้านสุขภาพจากสวีเดน และ สถาบันเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าคุณทหารลาดกระบัง (KMITL) ณ สถาบันมะเร็งแห่งชาติ (NCI) กรุงเทพมหานคร โดยมี เรืออากาศเอกนายแพทย์สมชาย ธนะสิทธิชัย ผู้อำนวยการสถาบันมะเร็งแห่งชาติ เป็นเจ้าภาพ

On 7 October, World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Ambassador Anna Hammargren witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Swedish health technology company Elekta and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) at the National Cancer Institute in Bangkok, hosted by Capt. Dr. Somchai Thanasittichai, Director of the NCI.

The agreement marks the beginning of a five-year collaboration focused on research, education, knowledge exchange, internships and innovation in medical technology. By bringing together Swedish expertise in precision cancer treatment with one of Thailand's leading technology universities, the partnership will help develop future talent and strengthen links between academia, industry and healthcare.

Ambassador Hammargren highlighted the close and growing cooperation between Sweden and Thailand in healthcare and life sciences, under the Sweden-Thailand Strategic Partnership. She also underscored Sweden's long-standing commitment to cancer prevention and women's health, including the pioneering role Swedish research has played in developing breast cancer screening programmes that have helped save lives around the world.

The Embassy of Sweden welcomes partnerships that connect academia, industry and healthcare to foster innovation, strengthen capacity and improve patient outcomes. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this collaboration in the years ahead.
