On the evening of July 22, 2002, two men grabbed Erica off the sidewalk outside her grandmother's home in Southwest Philadelphia, reportedly acting on false rumors that her family had money.

They drove her to an abandoned house 12 miles away, bound her eyes, hands, and feet with duct tape, and left her in the basement while demanding a $150,000 ransom.

Within 24 hours, Erica had gnawed through the tape on her wrists, freed herself, and broken through a basement window, screaming until two boys playing nearby heard her and helped pull her out.

Edward Johnson, 23, and James Burns, 29, were arrested within days. Johnson pleaded guilty in May 2003, and Burns was convicted of kidn*pping and related charges a month later.

The restaurant is JBJ Soul Kitchen.
