The arXiv one-year ban reveals that a lot of people who submit papers don't like...doing research. Reading papers is fun. Talking about papers in a group is interesting. Synthesizing the literature is rewarding. There are lot of careers don't involve those things & pay better.

@mathandcobb @TimHenke9 @CHaesemeyer Depending on how automatic the bans are, the only real issue with arxiv is adding co-authors without consent. But it really is wild how many PIs claim they can't even skim papers and are not responsible for their students publishing obvious fraud/slop (what is their role then?..)

@mathandcobb @TimHenke9 @CHaesemeyer Personally, I'd be embarrassed and feel at least a little bit responsible if this kind of slop was published under my name, even as a student with no say here. There's always an opportunity to review/report, plus it's partially the point of coauthorship to entrust your reputation

But tbf, exact roles are well-known inside experiments and can be discussed/verified externally, so individual contributions are clear where it matters most

It would be nice if collaborations had more authorship transparency for the public, maybe separate categories/acknowledgements page. But admittedly, it's really hard to design a system that's fair to all 1k-2k people which none of them will hack
