Two years ago today, I won $117,262.50 gambling.
I thought it was the best day of my life.
@DKSports and @BookitWithTrent and @br_betting did stories on me. I was invited into suites and onto the field for games. For months, I was the guy handing out locks. The guy who beat Vegas. The guy everyone wanted to be.
Nobody knew what was actually happening…I was crying myself to sleep most nights.
I had lost all of the money and I was terrified to tell anyone. I’d be around my family with a fake smile on my face, laughing, acting like everything was fine while I was dying inside.
I was embarrassed. Ashamed. Isolated.
And I kept thinking, “I did it once. I can do it again. I’ll just win it all back”…So I chased.
I maxed out credit cards. Took out loans. Borrowed money. Lied. Hid statements. Deposited more. Lost more.
For over a year, I lived two completely different lives. The person people saw online and the person I was alone in my bedroom were two completely different people.
Eventually, I didn’t see a way out. I was suicidal and was planning to take my own life…I’m grateful I found recovery before it was too late.
I’m not the guy handing out locks anymore. I’m not pretending to have everything figured out. I’m just a guy in recovery who finally learned that being honest is a hell of a lot better than hiding behind a fake smile.
If you’re chasing your losses, hiding your gambling, or pretending everything is okay when it isn’t, please tell someone.
You don’t have to keep being the person everyone thinks you are…Be honest. Open up. Ask for help. There is a life on the other side of this addiction and man it feels good! My DM’s are open.
