Manufacturing matters. The UK's thriving automotive sector, comprising dozens of OEMs and more than 2,500 suppliers, accounts for 10% of total UK exports and employs almost 800,000 people.
Automotive-related manufacturing contributes £67 billion turnover and £14 billion value added to the UK economy, and typically invests around £3 billion each year in R&D.
Tata, Ford, Bentley Motors, Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover and Stellantis have already pledged to invest £22.98 billion in the UK as they switch to electric vehicle production.
UK car production soared 11.7% in the first half of the year to 450,168 units with June – up 16.2% – the fifth consecutive month of growth, and commercial vehicle production increased by 16% in the same six-month period, with 58,675 vans, trucks, taxis, buses and coaches leaving British factories - 67.0% up on pre-pandemic 2019 volumes.
This growth is set to continue throughout the rest of the year, on the back of new model activity and, notably, the expected opening of Stellantis' electric van production facility in Ellesmere Port following a £100 million investment programme. #UKmfg
