Baty was a AAA player without an obvious MLB role available. The presumption was that the Mets would not need him badly enough to push hard for a return. Infield injuries have changed the calculus.

@WexlerRules I just think your takeaway from the reporting is too absolute. A Baty return was always a longshot for multiple reasons, but things have lined up just so:

-Mets are still in it
-Mets badly need a LHH IF
-Baty is seemingly on the shorter end of his projected return timeline

@WexlerRules The Mets’ playoff odds were under 20% at the time of that reporting. His season *was* likely over, in part because the team’s was as well.

But it was always plausible that he could return under the originally stated timeline, and the urgency to get him back has probably risen

@WexlerRules @gregjumpshot It was described as a 4–6 week injury, and there were 5 weeks left in the season at the time, so never crazy to think he might have made it back. And the injuries to McNeil and Lindor have certainly added urgency to the Mets’ infield needs since then.
