The Vols won, 34-24.
You want to fix education?
Fix #6: Stop pretending teachers are only working when you can see them.
Let me break down Fix #6.
The teacher is done at three o'clock. Everyone knows this. It is repeated in comment sections and family dinners and political speeches with the confidence of someone who has never stood in front of thirty two kids for seven hours and then gone home to grade the essays they wrote while also calling the parent of the kid who has been absent for four days and planning tomorrow's lesson and wondering whether the quiet girl in third period is okay because something seemed off and she could not get to her today. The job description ends at three. The job does not.
What does it mean in practice?
It means the stack of essays on the kitchen table at nine o'clock on a Sunday night. It means the lesson plan was written at 6 in the morning because the afternoon was eaten by a meeting that could have been an email. It means the parent email was answered at 10 pm because the school day did not have a moment to sit down and write it. It means the mental inventory a teacher carries of thirty-two individual children, what each one needs, who is struggling, who is lying, who came in hungry, who has not turned anything in for two weeks, and what that might mean. None of that stops at 3 pm. None of it shows up on a timesheet. None of it gets counted when someone says teachers have it easy because they get summers off.
How does this help kids?
A teacher who is respected for the full scope of her work stays. A teacher who is told repeatedly that her job is easy and her hours are short and her summers are long leaves, or she stops doing the parts of the job that happen after 3, because nobody sees them anyway, and nobody thanks her for them, and the only person who benefits is the kid, and the kid does not write the evaluation. When we pretend the job ends when the bell rings, we communicate something very clear about what we think teaching is worth. The teachers hear it. The good ones get tired of hearing it, and eventually, they go somewhere that does not make them defend the reality of their own workday.
How do we make this happen?
We need evaluations that account for the work that happens outside the building. We need schedules that build real prep time into the school day instead of assuming teachers will make up the difference at home. We need communities that push back when politicians and pundits reduce teaching to a part-time job with summers off, because that narrative has real consequences for who stays in the profession and who the kids get as a result. We need to stop asking teachers to do more with less and then acting surprised when they burn out. And we need to say out loud, clearly and without qualification, that the work teachers do after three o'clock is real work, it matters, and it deserves to be recognized as part of the job rather than dismissed as something they chose to do on their own time.
The goal is not sympathy. The goal is accuracy. Teaching is a full-time job that regularly becomes a second full-time job, and the people doing it deserve to have that truth spoken plainly.
