DITV Player Spotlight: Ty Bush
Position: Punter | #5 @T_BUSH5_
Hometown: Boerne, TX
High School: Boerne High School and Canyon High School
Class: Freshman @AthleticsCanyon@canyonhscougars@HoundFootball@Boernehs
Boerne might be a small town, but it’s been producing big noise on the Texas football scene. Ty Bush came out that program with both grit and swagger — a punter with linebacker pads, built to flip the field and bring the hit stick when needed. From Friday nights in Boerne to Saturdays in the Valley, Bush is carrying that underdog mentality with a hip-hop edge, ready to show he’s more than just a leg.
At Boerne High, Bush stacked All-State punter honors and still racked up 94 tackles, 2 picks, and a rep as one of the top 25 specialists in Texas. He wasn’t just punting — he was punishing. A real BBQ pit mix of smoke and fire, giving his squad both field position and muscle.
But Ty’s football journey didn’t just start in Boerne — it runs deep in Canyon. He suited up at Canyon High under his dad, now UTRGV head coach Travis Bush. That wasn’t a father handing his son freebies — it was old-school grind. Ty had to prove he belonged, stacking tackles and making plays while his dad pushed him like any other player. That bond between father and son became a foundation: respect, discipline, and toughness, all built under the Friday night lights.
Canyon High itself has always been about dogs, not flash. The Cougars sent out ballers like Keenan Howell, a lockdown DB who went on to Texas State, and baseball standouts like Preston Freeman and Ashton Whitley who kept repping the 830 beyond high school. It’s the kind of place that might not flood the NFL, but it forges players that earn their way, brick by brick. That’s the same fire Ty Bush carried when he lined up there — learning toughness in a program where respect gets earned, not given.
And it goes back another generation. Ty’s grandfather, Coach Rick Bush, is a Texas high school football name that carries weight — decades of building programs and molding young athletes across the state. That three-generation football tree — from Rick to Travis to Ty — is Valley gold. It’s tradition, it’s family, it’s football in their blood.
That’s why Down in the Valley is all in. The Bush family isn’t just coaching and playing — they’re weaving their story into the foundation of UTRGV Football. Ty Bush brings the leg, the grit, and the swagger, while his father builds the program, and his grandfather’s legacy looms in the background. This is bigger than punts — it’s a family embracing the Valley, and the Valley embracing them back.
Ty Bush isn’t just another leg — he’s a dawg with swagger, grit, and a game-changing weapon. The Bush name already carries weight in Texas football, and now Ty’s writing his own chapter Down in the Valley.
