I asked ChatGPT how much energy each blockchain consumes per transaction and the answer surprised me.

Flow is 14,160,000x more energy-efficient than Bitcoin and the most energy-efficient blockchain in the world.

1. Why does this matter for onchain builders?
It directly impacts costs, scalability, and sustainability which are critical for long-term onchain adoption.

A high-energy blockchain means: higher fees, less scalability, more reliance on off-chain solutions 🚫🙅‍♂️

2. Here’s how blockchains compare in energy per transaction:
🟠 Bitcoin – ~708 kWh
⚫️ Ethereum – ~0.03 kWh
🟢 Flow – ~0.00005 kWh

Flow is ~14M times more efficient than BTC and 600x more efficient than ETH!

Flow takes seriously the idea that we CAN break the "scalability trilemma" provided we are willing to do hard things.

We have implemented a data availability network, proposer-builder separation, light clients, stateless verifiers, a PoS beacon chain, optimistic execution (while mitigating the validator's dilemma), and we even threw in a breakthrough resource-oriented smart contract language while we were at it.
