So what we are seeing now is not a conflict between the bigoted (or sensible) middle-aged and the progressive (or misguided) young, but between two generations of gender nonconformists whose approaches to resisting gender expectations are difficult to reconcile.
@CapelLofft You may not hear about it, but support staff - especially front-line support staff - have had proportionally more cuts than academic staff.
There always seems to be budget for a new deputy VC of something though.
@bencooper@BertDalziel That tracks - the people most likely to complain about private services are those who can't quite afford them. The very poor don't even see it as an option. So people who can afford private cars but not private schools will gripe about the latter and not think about the former.
@latsot@polblonde@LaneyGB80 From my experience, I wouldn't say it's something 'men just do', though I've not had to navigate public transport with limited mobility. I've generally found people to be helpful, and that is probably mostly men. (Women are often wrangling children and bags.)
@pro_nouns Oh, they're very careful not to reveal Jamie's sex until near the end. The plot hinges on her (iirc) having to choose between going to a boy's school and going to a girl's school, because for some reason there are no mixed schools nearby.
@TonyMeadows@WeAreFairCop A blanket prohibition on the basis of sex makes no sense though. There are some women who are more physically capable than some men. Don't lower the standards and accept anyone who meets them.
@blackbirdpeeja Wow. He objects to them changing the meaning of what it means to be him, but is fine with them changing the meaning of what it means to be a woman.
@DOROTHYBADRICK1@GreenFemsUK@tribunaltweets The trans activist couldn't accept that his employers considered other employees besides him. He thinks they should have required all other employees to make him comfortable, and that failing to do so created an unsafe environment. So he took them to tribunal...
@rivier@nickwallis He sees his belief as self-evidently true. From his point of view, GC views are misinformation (and misinformation weaponised against him) so it's obvious they should be shut down
Labour is now committed to its section 28 on steroids
Letโs remember: section 28 was a horrendous law that intimidated teachers and others, suppressed the dissemination of information about homosexuality.
It was homophobic and it was awful.
But it did not create a criminal offence.
It did not prescribe penalties.
The Labour Partyโs draft bill to ban โconversion practicesโ is also homophobic. It also sets out to suppress the dissemination of information.
But it is far, far worse than section 28
It will criminalize a parent who says: โNo, youโre a boy. Maybe youโre gay. Thatโs fine: Letโs get you some therapy to explore the causes of your distress.โ
It will criminalize a parent who says โNo, I refuse to pay for binders, blockers, testosterone. Youโre a girl. Itโs fine to be a lesbian.โ
Such conversations may cause extreme distress. The minor may call them abusive.
Weโre talking about a criminal offence of refusing to allow your child to take harmful drugs. Of suggesting she might be a lesbian - not a boy. Of refusing to go along with her insistent demands.
***With a potential 5-year prison sentence.โข***
Letโs stop Labourโs Section 28!
We will not accept this latest iteration of anti gay and anti lesbian legislation - however well it is dressed up to look โprogressive.โ
@mellifera18@cervixen Absolutely. Identity can be a useful crutch - eg identifying as a member of a profession in order to inculcate professional values. But defining oneself as 'a something' means outsourcing and constraining one's sense of self to whatever 'a something' is perceived to be.
@cervixen Also, to be c1s means identifying with the same view of 'womanhood' as a trans identified man. Women who claim the label c1s and say TW do not threaten their sense of being a woman are saying that 'being a woman' is divorced from biology.
C1s literally recasts us in their image.
@thefempire50@leng_cath@avrilvanreyk His witness statement is linked from TTs substack. It's quite something.
He thinks any expression of GC views is harassment so he's suing his employer for allowing GCs to speak. And he thinks that 'you can't misgender with impunity' means 'all misgendering must be punished'.
@boreddeleuzian@CallsYouCochise You're comparing a dispute about whether a word can/should have an objective meaning with a group of people judging the motives and actions of a particular individual. What do they have in common?
