Nicholas Smyth recently argued there's no such thing as a political conservative. I disagree. Conservatism is a vision oriented toward preserving institutions, not an abstract doctrine. My response, out in European Journal of Political Theory:

My boy @TahgiTurner just got published in the European Journal of Political Theory making the argument too many people on "the Right" have forgotten:
Conservatism isn't nostalgia.
It's not “old thing good always”
It's a political vision rooted in prudence, inheritance, institutions, and the recognition that civilization is easier to destroy than rebuild.
Conservatism isn't fear of change.
It's the discipline of asking whether change preserves the institutions that make civilization possible, or whether it burns them down so midwits can feel profound.
This is the kind of serious work conservatism needs again.
Read it.
"If we take a political theory to be a mere set of abstract normative principles, then we cannot account for the political thinking displayed by everyday people who participate in political projects."
