The Government is working with leading retailers to create up to 100,000 jobs by the end of this Parliament.

The new Opening Shift programme will provide 11,000+ work experience placements for 18–24-year-olds, helping them gain skills, confidence and valuable experience to get into work.

This is about creating real opportunities and making sure young people can get the experience they need to secure a good job and build a brighter future.

In the same way we protect children from harm in the physical world, we need to guard them from highly graphic and violent content online. This is the sort of content that can traumatise our children or lead them down a scary and harmful path.

​I am very pleased that we in Labour are at the forefront of delivering this with the Online Safety Act, but in light of recent data, I asked the minister what more we can do to give Ofcom the powers to effectively protect our children.

This will be an incredibly worrying time for JLR workers and their families.

People will be thinking about mortgages and bills. That is why it matters that support is there quickly.

Our Labour Mayor has moved at pace to put an initial £500,000 package in place to help people affected by voluntary redundancy find new jobs and connect directly with employers looking for their skills.

That is one of the real benefits of having a Mayor - we’re able to respond locally, quickly and practically when people in our region need help.

Disrupting emergency services, blocking public roads, and smashing police vehicle windscreens isn't patriotism, it's lawless thuggery.

The recent blockades in Dover and Portsmouth aren't about securing borders; they are publicity stunts designed to cause chaos. The hard facts tell a completely different story: official border data shows small boat crossings are down significantly, with thousands of crossing attempts intercepted and criminal networks stripped of equipment before boats hit the water.

But actual progress doesn't serve people who rely on anger to stay relevant. When real enforcement drives numbers down, agitators move from port to port looking for their next photo-op. Let's call this behaviour out for what it is: intimidation posing as activism.

For too long, technical education hasn't had the recognition it deserves. That's changing.

We, in Labour, are opening up new opportunities for young people by giving them access to high-quality technical education, skills training and meaningful links to local employers from the age of 14.

We're backing the next generation with the skills they need to secure good jobs, boost our economy and build a stronger Britain for everyone.

For 14 years, the Conservative Government added fewer than 500 prison places, leaving our prisons dangerously overcrowded and placing huge pressure on the criminal justice system.

​Since 2024, we in Labour have already delivered more than 3,000 additional prison places as part of a wider plan to restore confidence in our justice system. Now, we are looking at creative solutions to deliver hundreds more and are responding to people’s concerns regarding the early-release scheme.

Too many homeowners have faced the stress and financial loss caused by rogue builders, whether through unfinished work, poor workmanship or losing money after paying upfront.

The Prime Minister has announced new measures to help protect homeowners and raise standards across the building industry.

These include a new Approved Code for home-improvement firms and a Trusted Payments app designed to help protect customers’ money by linking payments to agreed stages of work.

These are important steps towards giving homeowners greater confidence and protection when choosing a builder.

Yesterday was our first day back in Parliament after the summer recess, our new Prime Minister Andy Burnham delivered a statement on the direction of the government.

My question to the new Prime Minister was about something that affects every family in Birmingham Hall Green and Moseley: the safety of our young people.

I raised the urgent need for long-term, ring-fenced funding for neighbourhood policing and youth services, because our young people deserve safe spaces to grow, not just streets to avoid.

I was pleased that the Prime Minister committed to delivering exactly that. It’s a welcome first step, and I’ll be holding this government to that promise in the months ahead.

Safer streets start with investment in our communities, and I’ll keep fighting for that here in Westminster and back home.

🚨YELLOW WEATHER WARNING ALERT

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain across the West Midlands today, Thursday 27 August, from 5am until 10pm.

Heavy downpours, lightning and hail are possible, with a risk of localised flooding. There may also be disruption to roads, rail and bus services, and some homes and businesses could experience power cuts.

Take extra care if travelling:
* Check your journey before setting off and allow additional time.
* Do not drive or walk through floodwater.
* If you hear thunder while outside, seek shelter in a safe enclosed building or vehicle, and avoid trees and open or exposed areas.
* Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, particularly those who may need help during power cuts or flooding.
* Keep up to date with the latest information, as weather warnings can change quickly.

My thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, the Cleveland Police officers who tragically lost their lives while on duty, and with the families of the five others who died in the same incident.

My deepest condolences go out to everyone affected, and my thanks to all those who responded.

Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

For those celebrating today, congratulations on your achievements! And if your results weren’t what you had hoped for, remember that one set of results does not define your future. There are always different routes and opportunities ahead, and this is just one step in your journey.

Wishing every young person the very best as they take their next steps, whether that’s further education, an apprenticeship, starting work, or exploring a different path.

Thinking of everyone affected by the devastating fires around Stourbridge and Birmingham right now. It’s heartbreaking to see so many families losing their homes while our brave firefighters continue working non-stop.

​Please be sensible and keep safe:
​Hold off on risky activities:

1. Skip the garden BBQs, avoid open fires, and make sure cigarettes are fully out. It only takes one spark to start something catastrophic.
2. ​Follow official advice: Keep an eye on updates from local emergency services and the government, and follow their safety guidelines.

I welcome the Government's £2 bus fare cap from January 2027.

For Hall Green and Moseley, this is significant. Our residents rely on buses: for getting to work, school, medical appointments, seeing family.

This is Labour delivering practical support when families need breathing room on cost of living.

More money in pockets. Better access to jobs and services. That's what good policy looks like.

I visited the Sparkhill Jobcentre, the frontline staff do incredible work supporting people into employment, often dealing with complex cases and heavy workloads.

But the visit also highlighted real challenges: language barriers, gaps in training and digital support, and far too many young people struggling to get a foothold in the job market.

Employment can’t be tackled in isolation - job support, health, housing and skills training all need to join up.

That’s why I’ll be bringing together local colleges, employers, community groups and the DWP to build a joined-up plan for Birmingham Hall Green & Moseley.

Everyone deserves the chance to build a secure future.

The Prime Minister promised to give people breathing space on the cost of living and we're already delivering.

VAT on domestic electricity bills is being abolished from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, giving people breathing space this winter.

All 30 million households in Britain will benefit. Care homes, some charities and some small businesses will also benefit.
This is the Labour Party, delivering.

We claim to be a party that believes in international law. If we believe in international law, we must enforce it.

​Over two years ago now, the World Court ruled that Israel is illegally occupying Palestine. Yet, very little has been done that can actually deter or punish Israel.

​In this letter, I pushed with over 80 other parliamentarians for what the law and morality call on us to do: imposing sanctions on the Israeli regime.

Today, the Labour Party gets a fresh start. We have a new Prime Minister, determined to make Labour work for normal Britons: a Labour that is proud and confident, not one that tries to out-Reform Reform or out-Green the Greens.

In the past couple of years, I have dissented to bring Labour back to what it should stand for: voting against the proscription of Palestine Action and abstaining on votes cutting welfare to the most vulnerable. Many of our U-turns could have been avoided had we stuck to our principles from the start. I will keep fiercely advocating for our values, because, as Burnham has recognised, that is the only way we succeed: courageously charting our own path.

I wholeheartedly support the new Government, eager for change and willing to apologise for mistakes such as Labour's initially unacceptable response to the genocide in Gaza.

This is a Labour leadership that truly cares for Britain and her communities, unlike other party leaders who accept shady donations in the millions to line their own pockets while wasting taxpayer money on publicity stunts.

I will support the new leadership in every way I can, and keep raising my constituents' concerns with them, so that we can build a Labour and a country we can be proud of.

The number 96 has been tattooed on my wrist since 2015.

It reminds me every day that I was one of the lucky ones who came home from Hillsborough.

Today, standing in Parliament to speak as the Hillsborough Law passed was one of the proudest and most emotional moments of my life.

For the 97. For their families. For every campaigner who never gave up.
