Galan Multipurpose Port – Ready for the Export Surge!
Exports are booming, and EDR is stepping up to keep the momentum going.
To ensure seamless shipment of export commodities, we are committed to operating seven days a week at Galan Multipurpose Port (GMP) and we've formally called on the Customs Commission and cooperating with them to enhance this effort with:
-Full staffing on Saturdays & Sundays, starting August 15, 2026
-24/7 service availability throughout the week
t's a national mission.
Together with key government stakeholders, we're removing barriers, accelerating trade, and driving Ethiopia's export growth forward.
The antecedent of the green legacy initiative launched eight years ago by our Prime Minister @AbiyAhmedAli has now turned into a single-day national plantation of over 800 million trees on August 3, 2026.
At the run-up to this national planting day, Ethio-Djibouti Railway staff are carrying out recurring tree planting across the railway corridor to keep the momentum going.
Rail-anchored sleeper laying continues to be a key part of our railway infrastructure work for EDR. This method is now being applied to the Sabata Container Yard expansion project — helping speed up our railway construction timeline.
2018 in review: We moved 3.8 million tonnes of cargo by rail—exceeding our annual target by 30% and outpacing last year's performance by an incredible 72%.
The momentum is undeniable, and trade is on the move. Here's to an even stronger 2019!
Strategic Expansion: As our coffee and agricultural commodity exports continue to surge, we are scaling our logistics infrastructure to match that momentum. We officially launch the construction of our second logistics hub and the deployment of our container yard—the Sabata (Diimaa) Export-Import Logistics Center. Strategically positioned adjacent to the industrial area, this new facility places us at the epicenter of the western and southwestern coffee production corridors.
From bulk fertilizers to containerized goods—including coffee, cereals, and livestock—we will be fully operational very soon, facilitating seamless shipments directly between Sabata and the Port of Djibouti. Our logistics sector is delivering on its promise of efficiency and growth.
From single sleeper laying to assembled track installation – we’re picking up momentum, one step at a time.
For months , our track crews mastered the art of single-track sleeper laying across the Ethio-Djibouti Railway. That foundation taught us the value of precision, patience, and incremental progress – and now, it’s paving the way for something bigger.
We’ve recently begun using lifting cranes to install assembled track-sleeper units, a major leap in efficiency and coordination. And soon, we’ll be rolling out commercial track-laying machines – a game-changer for our infrastructure journey.
Every small step counts. Every lesson learned builds the future.
Proud of the team for pushing boundaries and raising the bar.
Today we finalized our 2019 Corporate Plan for both operations and infrastructure development, with all Department Heads and Chief Officers in attendance.
This year's plan is set to double in scale compared to 2018—we're gearing up for significant growth!
A heartfelt thank you to our staff—your unwavering dedication has been instrumental in bringing EDR to this level.
From 9% to 50% – now THAT’s logistics momentum for export commodities.
The Ethio-Djibouti Railway (EDR) is transforming the import-export game:
50% of exports and 24% of imports now move through the Port of Djibouti via EDR – up from just 9% two years ago.
But we’re not stopping there.
New center beam, gondola, and flat container wagons – inspected and in service.
More trains, More capacity, Stronger sea-to-city connectivity.
This isn’t just about cargo. It’s about the perseverance, energy, and operational grit of the EDR community – powering a corridor that connects nations and fuels growth.
The rail is rising, trade is moving and. Logistics is spurring.
Endless momentum ahead.
We’ve reviewed our performance matrix across core operations and infrastructure development — and while we’ve stayed focused on our planned objectives, we know we still have a long way to go. But that only drives us further.
Every operational win and infrastructure milestone has been built on one unwavering goal: keeping cargo and trade moving along the Ethio-Djibouti Railway corridor.
Today, together with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and maritime authorities, we conducted a thorough review of stakeholder engagement with the Ethio-Djibouti Railway (EDR) Share Company.
Key stakeholders include:
- Ethiopian freight forwarding agencies
- Djibouti freight forwarding agencies
- Major shipping liners
- custom Authorities
The review underscored one critical goal: seamless logistics coordination and communication among all parties to speed up cargo delivery, ensure timely customs handling, and maintain flawless documentation to keep the trade flowing.
Today we officially launched the Ethio-Djibouti Bulk Cargo Container (BCC) — a game-changing solution to tackle shipping liner container shortages for bulk cargo exports and imports.
This marks another major milestone in the Ethio-Djibouti cargo container shipment journey, especially during these challenging times of fuel shortages and price surges.
A huge thank you to the Ethiopian and Djibouti customs authorities for making this happen in such a timely manner.
At EDR , we keep trade moving. 🇪🇹🤝🇩🇯
Ethiopia isn’t just switching to electric cars — it’s going ALL IN on green heavy machinery too.
New policy shift: natural gas-powered electric heavy trucks and industrial equipment are now part of the plan.
Under the bold leadership of HE Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali (Dr.), Ethiopia isn’t waiting on the sidelines.
-Confronting climate challenges head-on
-Driving a greener economy
-Leading Africa’s energy transition
Truck cargo logistics shortages are looming.
We’re diversifying our cargo mix. Most of our flat wagons and box wagons are now moving containers and essential bulk goods.
But that’s not all. To keep heavy industry moving, we’ve introduced new rolling stock—center beam (NW6)—dedicated to steel and billet for metal manufacturers.

The Ethio-Djibouti Railway Share Company is working to address the high demand observed in the import and export trade sector by importing empty containers from the port of Djibouti into the country and facilitating them with better efficiency at the Modjo Dry Port, as well as at the railway cargo stations in Modjo, Adama, Sebeta, and Dire Dawa.
Currently, the number of railway cargo users is increasing significantly, and we are making preparations to ensure that railway operations are carried out efficiently and reliably.
To make these preparations complete, it is essential to quickly clear import and export cargo and move railway wagons for additional assignments.
Therefore, our valued customers engaged in import and export trade are expected to support our efforts to enhance railway operational capacity by promptly taking delivery of the cargo we bring into the country and the export cargo we transport to the port.
Thus, beyond introducing additional cargo wagons into service, adjustments have been made by doubling railway operations and reducing the total loading and unloading time for railway cargo from the previous 24 hours to 12 hours. Recognizing this, we request all our Ethio-Djibouti Railway customers to be present from the origin (Djibouti) to the destinations (Dire Dawa, Adama, Modjo, Modjo Dry Port, and Sebeta), complete the necessary customs documentation and procedures, and finalize cargo clearance within 12 hours.
