Rest in peace to the legendary voice of Jiminy Cricket 🙏
Remembering Cliff Edwards, who passed away 55 years ago today at the age of 76. Affectionately known as “Ukulele Ike,” his remarkable career stretched across vaudeville, music, radio, film, television, and classic animation.
His unforgettable roles and contributions included:
• Jiminy Cricket — Pinocchio
• Jiminy Cricket — Fun and Fancy Free
• Dandy Crow — Dumbo
• Endicott — His Girl Friday
• “Ukulele Ike” — pioneering singer, musician, and vaudeville performer
• “When You Wish Upon a Star” — introduced the timeless Disney song as Jiminy Cricket
• “Singin’ in the Rain” — helped popularize the song through his celebrated 1929 performance
and many more.
As the original voice of Jiminy Cricket, Edwards first performed “When You Wish Upon a Star” for Disney’s Pinocchio in 1940. The song plays during the film’s opening credits and returns at its conclusion, helping establish Jiminy as the heart and conscience of the story.
Written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington, the song became the first from a Disney film to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Edwards’ recording later grew into one of the most recognizable pieces of music in Disney history, becoming closely associated with the studio’s message of hope, dreams, and imagination.
Long before joining Disney, Edwards had already become one of the most popular entertainers of the 1920s, helping popularize the ukulele and becoming an early pioneer of scat singing. His influence crossed generations and left a lasting mark on both American popular music and animation.
Rest in peace, Cliff Edwards. Your voice continues to remind generations to wish upon a star ❤️
