Thinking of my late grandparents, orphaned survivors of the Armenian Genocide.
I wish I had told them more often how much empathy I felt for their unimaginable suffering & loss, how I was in awe of their strength & resilience, and how much I admired & loved them. I miss them. ֍
"It’s up to each of us to share the honest truth of the Medz Yeghern, even as many try to deny and dismiss its horrors. To remember and honour the memories of the victims lost to the Armenian Genocide. And to fight back against oppression, violence, and injustice – whenever and wherever it occurs."
A commemorative message from the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada on the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
Message commémoratif du très honorable Justin Trudeau, Premier ministre du Canada, à l'occasion du 109e anniversaire du génocide arménien.
@JustinTrudeau
Whether I was living in Beirut, Montreal or Boston, my family and I have always joined with other Armenians throughout the world in marking Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day on April 24. Today, the 109th anniversary of 1.5 million Armenians being driven from their homes and killed at the hands of Ottoman Turks. And now, it is happening again. We can no longer take this day to simply remember: we have to act. Please see my letter to the global community, which ran today in the @washingtonpost, the @nytimes, and the @thetimes. I have taken this extraordinary step since the situation is dire, and worsening.
For nine months, Azerbaijan has targeted the Nagorno-Karabakh region and deprived more than 120,000 Armenians of critical resources including food and medicine. Our bipartisan letter calls on the State Department to sanction individuals associated with these military attacks.
Having suffered a blockade, starvation, and a brutal unprovoked invasion at the hands of Azerbaijan — Armenians are forced out of Artsakh in droves, fearing their fate under Baku’s tyrannical rule.
This is ethnic cleansing in real time.
Ashkhen is from Kornidzor. Her son died in the 2020 Artsakh War, leaving behind 2 daughters. She has relatives in Artsakh. She hopes they’ll arrive tomorrow. She says that’s the story of the Armenian people: We rise, then we fall, then we struggle to rise again.

"Every year on April 24, we mark the 1915 Armenian genocide.
"This year, we should also reflect on the present day, for Armenians are again facing a new set of atrocities as the world watches on with indifference."
