Thank you so much to Cindy Lawrence, executive director and CEO of talkSTEM partner institution @MoMath1 in NYC!

Cindy recently gave our founder, Dr. Koshi Dhingra a tour of the fabulous new, expanded site for The National Museum of Mathematics. We were skeptical that MoMath could get any better, but somehow they outdid themselves!

It's been wonderful to work with MoMath for almost a decade, when their founder collaborated with talkSTEM our very first STEM walking tour in downtown Dallas back in 2017.

Since then, we've had a blast teaming up to spread the ubiquity, usefulness, and joy of math in everyday life.

*SPOTTED* MathFinder at the @dallasarboretum!

We're thrilled to introduce two new updates to the MathFinder app:

1. New augmented reality tools allow users to count, measure, and classify real world objects and places, using their camera feed.

That means users can measure lengths, areas, and angles using different AR measurement tools, count objects using a counting tool, and find shapes in their environment using a shapefinder tool.

2. Users can now (virtually or in-person) visit any number of locations from the Arboretum to the Zoo within the same game, using their same customized avatar.

This means they can explore a park in New York and downtown Dallas within minutes, and progress through walk stops at over 30 different informal learning sites!

We are thrilled to celebrate the inaugural convening of the NTX STEM+ ecosystem on October 17th!

The event will bring together STEM+ providers, educators, community organizations, industry partners, higher education, and other stakeholders from across North Texas for a day of connection, collaboration, shared learning, and…prizes?

Yup, prizes! And we’re not (just) talking about the friends you made along the way.

talkSTEM will be sponsoring a contest open to all attendees, where we’ll invite participants to make their own STEM walk** using their own photo in tandem with our custom ai tool.

The first 26 complete submissions will win a prize!

** “Wait, what’s a STEMwalk?” So glad you asked! STEM walks are a fun, easy, completely personalizable teaching and learning tool that'll get you asking questions and appreciating STEM. When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us.

Thanksgiving is months away, but we can’t wait. We are SO thankful — both for our partnership with @SMUTeacher and for the generous funding from @NSF.

The partnership between SMU and us here at talkSTEM has received an additional $300,000 from the National Science Foundation, under the “Dear Colleague Letter” opportunity for current grantees to further integrate generative AI into their projects.

We look forward to developing and testing AI tools that support educators in developing Math Walk stops in their local schools and communities, and engaging educators in sustained professional learning opportunities around GenAI in place-based education.

Stay tuned — we will be recruiting educators (both from schools and informal learning sites) to join the fun!

Dallas is jam-packed full of cool sights (and sites): skyscrapers, museums, parks, and so much more!

The city is rich with people, places, and things that are impressive, interesting, and informative. In every nook and cranny, we can find STEM in action — we just need to stop, observe, and ask questions.

As the leaves change and temperatures (hopefully) drop (seriously, no more triple digits please?!) Fall is a great time to take a walk and appreciate all that Dallas has to offer.

But wait, Dallas has almost 350 square miles of land, that’s about 1.48 billion steps! How could anyone possibly cover everything?

You (and your feet) can rest easy, because we have a collection of virtual tours that take you all around Dallas, complete with STEM-centric guidance to help you think a little deeper about the STEM that’s all around us.

While these videos work as stand-alone virtual visits, we hope they inspire Dallas locals to get out and actually explore these places, in-person. Whether it’s your first time at the @DallasMuseumArt or you have weekly picnics at @KlydeWarrenPark, approaching Dallas with a STEM lens adds a whole new layer of fun!

Our library of free resources is great for students and educators alike, ages 9 to 99 — anyone and everybody with a love of learning and insatiable curiosity.

Delighted with this summer's successful run of our talkSTEM Educator Fellowship, supported by @IfThenSheCan (an initiative of #LydaHillPhilanthropies).

We worked with 15 talented educators to explore place-based learning and classroom-ready resources like our STEMwalk videos and MathFinder AI tool. Now that school is in session, we're looking forward to them bringing what they learned from our fellowship and into their classrooms.

Happy #NationalParkWeek!

National Parks are a great way to enjoy beautiful scenery and fresh air and, bonus, they're crawling with STEM concepts!

From nature and ecosystems to the mathematics of the parks' elevation and dimensions, there's no shortage of thoughtful questions that these parks can inspire.

When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us.

Happy #NationalAviationDay! Today, we’re celebrating the STEM-fueled accomplishments of aviation pioneers, The Wright Brothers, and the airborne advancements they inspired.

You may think of planes as anything from an extraordinary feat of transportation to a giant metal tube that scares your dog when it flies overhead, but there’s no denying that they’re an incredible collection of STEM concepts working together in harmony. When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us.

For a great way to take to the skies without ever having to leave the ground, check out our partner site, The Frontiers Of Flight Museum (@FrontofFlight). It’s full of interesting, informative exhibits that are great for anybody (even if you’re afraid of heights)!

Tomorrow is #NationalAviationDay, and we're celebrating with help from the @FrontofFlight Museum!

In honor of #TheWrightBrothers, we’re taking a close look at their 1903 flyer and asking: “What inspired the gravity-defying duo?”

Turns out, birds get a lot of credit! They might make flying look easy (bunch of show-offs…), but it actually involves a lot of physics.

Luckily, The Wright Brothers were up for the challenge. Take a virtual walk with us to explore the avian-inspired questions of “what,” “how,” “why,” and “huh?” that helped make The Wright Brothers’ historic flyer a success.

When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us. That's why we love Math walks - they're a fun, easy, completely personalizable teaching and learning tool that'll get you asking questions and appreciating Math and STEM.

Our MathFinder project is made possible with funding and support from @NSF, as well as partner sites like The Frontiers of Flight Museum. Be sure to visit the museum and take some of your own Math walks!

Did you spend the summer learning? We bet you did, even if you didn't realize it!

STEM is all around us, so we asked some high schoolers to share some pictures from their summer vacations, along with the STEM questions they inspired.

Take a look at some of their observations, and challenge yourself to find (and appreciate) the STEM in your life, outside of the classroom!

If you go to the @DallasMuseumArt, you might be *bowled* over by the beauty of works like this Keir bowl!

We may think of bowls today as a vessel for popcorn or the landing zone for your house keys, but this ceramic from 13th century Iran holds a key to understanding culture, history, and math. As the star of this Math walk, the Keir bowl invites us to observe, identify, and appreciate symmetry through its careful patterns and vivid colors.

When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us.

That's why we love Math walks - they're a fun, easy, completely personalizable teaching and learning tool that'll get you asking questions and appreciating Math that lives in real world places and artworks. Think art and math are two totally different subjects? Think again!

At the @DallasMuseumArt, the fun starts before you even walk into the building, with the Genesis mosaic. Not only is Genesis gorgeous to look at and steeped in history, it's the star of this Math walk focused on patterns.

Join us as we explore color through the mathematics of a color wheel, the inner workings of a printer, and what any of that has to do with artwork that was made WAY before your Xerox.

Two things go in cones: ice cream and…astronauts?!

The scientists behind Apollo 7’s command module put a lot of thought into its type and shape; a truncated cone. But why a cone? What made it fit to safely carry a three person crew and travel over 4.5 million miles, a distance that would surely make your ice cream melt? Take a walk through the #FrontiersOfFlightMuseum to learn about this incredible vessel.

Most people go to the The @DallasZoo to marvel at and learn about the world's incredible animals, but here's an added benefit of the zoo: it's a GREAT place to learn math!

We've seen four-legged animals walk, but have you ever really thought about how they walk? If they all walk the same way? How similar are the walking patterns of a small house cat and a huge elephant?

When we take just a little bit of extra time to ask questions, everywhere becomes an opportunity to understand and appreciate the STEM that surrounds us.
