People mad about this misunderstand something important about writing. It is COMPLETELY NORMAL for characterization to be informed by character traits or biographical facts that are known to the writer but never explicitly stated on screen/page.
The thing that really bothered me about this film is that, okay you can't capture Evelys art or the books version of DC weird European medieval space. But to default to the most generic mid 2010s uninspired looking guardians of the galaxy ripoff shit was sooo cowardly.
nothing inspires a great performance like not auditioning for the role you have no way to prepare for because they also neglected to give you a script before shooting
