As a lesbian, I am so tired of this nonsense. I am tired of corporate Pride and activist Pride.

This week HelloFresh decided that the best way to celebrate Pride Month was to post jokes about preparing for anal sex and offering high-fibre recipes to help people "prep". They then doubled down with a discount code called BOTTOMSUP.

Inclusion! WOO! 🙄

The thing that frustrates me is that people like me have spent years defending gay rights against accusations that we are hypersexual, inappropriate, and incapable of ordinary family life.

That was one of the central prejudices gay people faced. For decades, opponents portrayed gay men in particular as sexually obsessed and depraved. They argued that homosexuality was all about sex rather than love, commitment, relationships and family. The fight for equal rights was partly a fight against exactly that caricature.

And now here we are. A major multinational company has decided the best way to celebrate Pride is to publicly discuss anal sex. What an achievement.

The same-sex marriage movement wasn't about sex. It was about love, commitment, and the ability to build a life with the person you love. It was about family and equality before the law.

Most gay people are not what the weirdos in the HelloFresh marketing department think we are. We go to work, pay bills, walk the dog, argue about whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher, and try to build a decent life together.

You know... Normal things.

The overwhelming majority of gay people just want to be accepted and left alone. We want the same freedoms, responsibilities and opportunities as everyone else. We don't need multinational corporations making dirty jokes about us to feel "included".

What makes this even more ridiculous is that HelloFresh's core market is clearly not radical "queer" activists with blue hair and septum rings.

Their customers are overwhelmingly middle-class couples and families. Busy parents. Professionals. People with disposable income who want convenient meals after work.

How hard would it have been to make a genuinely wholesome Pride advertisement?

Two mums cooking dinner with their kids or two husbands hosting friends. A same-sex couple just making dinner together or flipping a coin to see who has to cook. A simple message acknowledging families and love. Instead they went with rectum jokes.

Somewhere along the way after the TQ+ hijacked our movement, Pride stopped being about acceptance and started being about performance. A small but influential group of activists have convinced themselves that being as shocking, vulgar and sexually explicit as possible is somehow brave and intrinsically "queer". They think boundaries of any kind are oppression including standards and decorum. They think manners are censorship.

The result is campaigns like this one and somehow people are shocked when there is backlash against us all.

I actually feel really sorry for gay men in particular because one of the oldest stigmas they have faced is the idea that they are dirty, promiscuous and defined entirely by sex. This campaign reinforces that stereotype.

If you wanted to design an advertisement that would make ordinary people roll their eyes and think Pride is ridiculous, or shield their children's eyes in horror, you would struggle to do better than this.

The irony is that HelloFresh's marketing department thinks this is progressive. It's regressive and distasteful. It takes decades of work by ordinary gay people who want to be seen as neighbours, colleagues, parents, partners and family members and reduces all of it to a crude sexual punchline.

The people who fought for our rights wanted dignity, but the people most enthusiastic about Pride today seem determined to turn it into a fetish convention with corporate sponsors.

In the UK, 11 trans people have been murdered since 2000.

In the same country, from 2009 - 2021, 16 women were murdered by serving or retired police officers. Not killed by officers in the line of duty — flat out murdered.

In 2022 alone, 11 British women were killed by male strangers. 12 were murdered by their own sons; 150 British women have been murdered by their own sons since 2012.

On average, a woman is murdered by a man in the UK once every 72 hours.

Where is the Day of Remembrance for the women murdered by their own sons? By their husbands, their fathers, their brothers? By serving police officers?

In the last 25 years, there have been nearly twice as many trans-identifying murderers than there have been murder victims - 20 murderers, versus 11 victims — and yet we’re told to believe that this is a genocide, while our own dead go ignored and unnamed.

These people are, per capita, the safest demographic in the UK, with a homicide rate of 0.38 per 100k (for women, it’s 0.50 per 100k, and for normal men, it’s 1.23.) but we’re supposed to believe that they’re being physically exterminated? Or is genocide another one of those words that has deliberately been stripped of its meaning, like “woman” and “female”?

Who gains when people are conditioned to roll their eyes at the word “genocide”? When “woman” has no meaning in law or policy? What is the end game here?

Fun facts. Before the 2020 election Leslie Stahl told the world that Hunter Biden's laptop was just a conspiracy and that it had been discredited. Both lies. Under Measure NN, voters approved roughly $47 million per year with a specific commitment: maintain 700 sworn Oakland police officers. As of early 2026, OPD has approximately 618 sworn officers — roughly 90 below the legal mandate and more than 250 below the independent recommendation of 877.

Attrition continues, with dozens more officers on extended leave. Despite multiple tax measures and repeated assurances, the department remains critically understaffed for the workload the city faces. Voters just declined to write another blank check.

This is not an isolated funding issue. Mayor Lee accepted significant contributions from the Duong family, owners of California Waste Solutions, who were later tied to the federal corruption case involving her predecessor. The family ranked among her largest donors. Some contributions were returned only after indictments and public scrutiny intensified.

The pattern is consistent: proximity to the previous administration’s problems, reliance on new revenue measures, and outcomes that have not matched the promises made to voters. Oakland residents are experiencing the results in real time — on the streets, in response times, and in basic service delivery.

The structural budget deficit remains severe. Executive priorities have included significant staff compensation increases even as the city grapples with vacancies and service gaps. Voters appear to have noticed the disconnect.

Accountability is not partisan. It is the basic requirement of effective local government. Mayor Lee’s first year has revealed the same challenges that led to the previous recall — now with new leadership at the helm.

First of all, 95% of men who identify as transgender retain their penises. Feel free to fact check me. As for the actual cosmetic changes (you should look up what that means; removing an organ is anything but cosmetic), putting on a dress and a cheap wig doesn’t make a man incapable of rape.

Second of all, are you really stupid enough to think that one can only commit rape with a penis? The worst rapes I’ve seen, as far as physical injury to the victim are concerned, were object-penetration rapes. A gun, a bottle, a tree branch — or a mop handle, shoved two and a half feet into an 89 year old woman’s vagina. She died. When we found her, you could see the tip of the mop handle as a lump under her skin, about two inches below her sternum.

You mention my “stereotypical ignorance,” but my opposition to genderism stems from the kind of experience that you seem to have been fortunate enough to avoid. I’ve seen firsthand the things that predatory men do to women and girls: both the acts and the aftermath. Will you look Tremaine Carroll’s victims in the eye and tell them that their suffering was simply collateral damage in the fight for their rapist’s right to be called a woman? How about the little girls whom Katie Dolatowski raped at knifepoint? Will you tell them to their faces to “reframe their trauma”?

Your ideology has given the very worst of men an all-access pass to the places where we are at our most vulnerable, and women and children have been raped as a result. That much is proven fact. Your continued support for policies that you know are leading to the continuing sexual victimization of women and girls is shameful, especially if you truly are female yourself.

Hey @TomSteyer, my mother has also loved sports her entire life, except she didn’t get to play sports in high school because her school didn’t have any women’s teams. She’s only a few years older than you & was in college when Title IX passed. She became the captain of the first women’s tennis team at her university.

My mom grew up watching her five brothers be celebrated for their athleticism. Meanwhile, she had no teams available to her. My mom is a naturally gifted athlete, but girls were expected to sit on the sidelines, cheer for boys, and never imagine themselves on the field.

Then, after Title IX passed, everything changed. Her university formed a women’s tennis team. She tried out, made the team, and became team captain. That opportunity, delayed for years, shaped her life. It gave her confidence, leadership, friendships, pride, and a sense of belonging that had been denied to her simply because she was female.

For millennia, women were kept out of public life, out of education, out of professions, out of the law, out of the vote, and yes, out of athletics, all on the basis of SEX, not gender.

And now we are told by you, Tom Steyer, to pretend that sex is irrelevant. That male bodies have no advantage. That girls should just accept losing medals, titles, records, scholarships, and privacy. That after centuries of struggle, suddenly the category “woman” is opt-in for any boy who wants in.

But having inherited those rights from my mother and grandmothers who fought hard for them, I cannot and will not sit back and let you destroy these hard earned rights for future generations of girls.
