In a windowless room on Bush Street is Audium, where 49 people sit in total darkness while sound moves around them through 176 speakers. There is nothing else like it on the planet.

Audium calls itself a "theater of sound." No stage, no screen, nothing to look at. Just an hour of composed sound choreographed through speakers hidden in the sloping walls, the floating floor, and the suspended ceiling. The lights go out, and as its director likes to say, hopefully it takes you somewhere.

It's the life's work of Stan Shaff, a jazz trumpeter who, back in the late 1950s, wanted to move sound through space the way dancers move their bodies. With engineer Doug McEachern, who designed the custom equipment, he staged early experiments around the Bay using portable rigs of a dozen or so speakers.

The first Audium opened in 1967 in the Richmond, during the Summer of Love. When that building sold, the pair bought a former donut shop on Bush Street, spent five years tinkering with speakers and acoustic treatments, and opened the purpose-built theater you visit today on Halloween night, 1975, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Shaff was staging immersive surround sound roughly two decades before Dolby brought it to movie theaters.

For more than 50 years, Stan composed and performed nearly every show himself. He's 96 now and retired, and his son David, also a trumpet player, runs the place. In a genuine changing of the guard, Audium recently began handing the room to a rotating cast of emerging sound artists through a residency program. And last year, for the theater's 50th anniversary, David revived Audium VI, the very first piece his father made for the space in 1975.

The red 1970s carpet is still down, it has never taken a dime of corporate money, and it remains, as one of its crew put it, one of the last cool, weird, old-school things in San Francisco. Go sit in the dark.

@loomdoop Lot of people in the comments completely unable to think beyond first order effects. Decade down the line, these things will be empowered to scoop up protestors or people based on an image in a database. Better hope you don't look anything like a carjacker from the next town.
