During my final years as a student of Ilorin, we were annoyed when they increased the mixed with extra rice from N800, to N1200 and eventually to N1500. When I got to Lagos and entered Chicken Republic hoping it would be the same as item7, a plate of food was N5000, I ran.

I also didn't have to work or learn how to work till I graduated, being the first child, I realized the burden on me, nobody told me before I started following my dad to work at site. It was tough at first cuz I couldn't do half the time those guys worked, but with time I adapted

I was shocked. And it’s not that I was a Nepo like that o. But we had a big man in the family that made sure the education of most of the children in the extended family were taken care of, at his cost.

It never reached the level of doing that kind of job to make money to feed or pay school fees.

In fact, before graduation from the university, I never did any work to raise money for myself because I never needed to.

The three jobs I did (and none was up to 2 months) while still schooling were in family businesses.

- teaching in a primary school
- fuel attendant at a filling station
- supporting in mounting rental tents.

All were family businesses and I can’t even remember whether I was paid. Just one or two week work when on holiday.

But site labour and similar work, I don’t think I would have survived 😭

This made me think people that used to do that kind of job were people that never had intention of going to university. So, a shock to me knowing many grads here did such jobs.

@nicktostos @SirJarus Some Artisans actually earn way above minimum wage monthly, but the money is spent almost immediately as they receive it. At least I know some Welders earn on avg 120k a month if you calculate how much they earn a day nd there's no resting fa, we work sometimes 7days a week

@__MUHSEEN__ @SirJarus ...."if you want a child to learn work, you have to give him some stipends as incentives". Most "oga" we grew up to are known to be wicked and overuse their apprentice with little or no money to compensate.

@__MUHSEEN__ @SirJarus This issue of apprentice absconding from work to chase "easy money" didn't just start recently and has been like this even during my dad's early days as a welder. Most "oga" have their part to play in how an apprentice turned out to be. My dad usually says;....
