For those who are concerned that elections without the @albd1971 will not be credible, there are precedents in Bangladesh’s history for corrective action. In 1988, 1996, and 2024 elections were not deemed credible and the governments elected were not able to remain in power.

It is now in the interest of the Interim Government, the major political parties, and other domestic and international stakeholders to hold the best possible elections and encourage voter participation. This is how to ensure the credibility and legitimacy of the process.

Finally, it is worth keeping in mind that it was always unlikely that the AL would participate in the election. With Hasina certain to have been banned regardless, the AL would likely have boycotted anyway and tried to disrupt the process. All the IG’s decision does is remove the boycott card from the AL’s deck.
