The Good Subsidy - Bad Subsidy Paradox: If a 10 Rs Subsidy is bad a 450 Rs Subsidy can't be good!
Everything with ill intent comes to bite you back in the face... When on 28 February 2022, Imran Khan announced a Rs 10 subsidy on the price of Petrol and Diesel, Shahbaz Sharif and the opposition went ape shit.
They had been politically using the post COVID surge in commodity prices to place pressure on the govt and criticising fuel price increases, and there was a "Mehengai March" and a Vote of No Confidence underway, but when this subsidy package was announced - they flip flopped and suggested this should never have been done. From that point on, it was touted by them as the ultimate example of fiscal irresponsibility by Imran Khan.
Today, the same people now have egg on their faces.
Imran Khan's subsidy was as costed a subsidy as the one now is. We had had a bunch of meetings. The provinces had been asked to contribute. There were savings in the federal kitty and in SOEs that would be used. The cost came to Rs 30-50 bln per month.
Today. Shahbaz Sharif said that Petrol should be at Rs 544 and Diesel at Rs 790. That makes the per litre subsidy on Petrol Rs 200+ and on Diesel Rs 450+. According to him, the govt has already borne a subsidy amount of Rs 125 bln in 3 weeks. I'm just quoting his figures.
The truth is, the only two things that have been proven are that (1) Imran Khan's management of the economy, in particular through the challenges of COVID, was as good as Pakistan has seen and (2) that this govt is now panicking because in 4 years, they have actually enacted zero meaningful reform and Pakistan suffers from the most painful stability it has ever had.
Even the status quo is only sustainable if the war ends soon. If it doesn't, the economic disaster wrought by this govt will be plain for all to see.
The IMF may not have been pleased then, and they may be quieter now, but all that does prove is that indeed the must have been external pressure to get rid of a PM who was actually independent in foreign policy. The contradictions otherwise are there for all to see.
But if there is one piece of sane advice the govt should heed right now it is this. In times of crisis, the only predictable thing is unpredictability. And in times of unpredictability, the most important factor is to have real political stability. And that cannot happen without reaching out to Imran Khan. No amount of good subsidy can change that!
Thinking about Bunyanun Marsoos from verse 4, As-Saf of Quran:
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِيْنَ يُقَاتِلُوْنَ فِيْ سَبِيْلِهٖ صَفًّا كَاَنَّهُمْ بُنْيَانٌ مَّرْصُوْصٌ
"Surely Allah loves those who fight in His cause in solid ranks as if they were one concrete structure."

I submitted an article to The News for publication on how ppl shld vote.
They said they wld publish before election day but haven't.
Perhaps because it was too unpalatable; too anti-Nawaz or anti-estab, or too pro PTI
Anyway here it is. My view which I believe was censored:
Jürgen Klopp has announced his decision to step down as #LFC manager at the end of the season, having informed the club’s ownership of his wish to leave his position in the summer.
Arsal Hashmi rented my widowed grandmother's annexe. He tried to do some construction illegally and when my mother confronted him about it, he said "take me to court".
His contract expired in November 2023 and he's since refused to vacate the premises, residing rent free 🧵
A group of academics from LUMS including HOD, Dean and various faculty members of Law School have filed a petition in the Supreme Court through Advocate Supreme Court @miansamiuddin challenging the government’s decision to “en masse #Deport#Afghans” and have sought order from the #SupremeCourt to restrain law enforcement agencies from implementing the decision.
Another petition has been filed earlier by various parliamentarians and rights activists through ASC @umerijazgilani.
Another raid on my house in Islamabad. No warrant. No cause.
I was just downloading the CCTV footage of a raid on my house in Islamabad, but it is already on the net. Thank you.
I just want to say a few things from the heart.
a. What puzzles me first of all is that I already have bail in the fake Anti-Corruption FIR on me until November 13th. In court, the judge was astonished that there was no complainant. The complainant did not exist! The prosecution then took a while to decide and tell the judge that the FIR was based on an anonymous complaint.
b. What also puzzles me is that I actually took the honourable decision to try and face every charge, like other Peshawar MPAs. I even went to meet the CCPO. I went to NAB in a fake case when everyone told me not to, and told them I would collaborate with their investigation. I went to extend my bail in the Anti-Corruption court, and when the lawyers suggested to extend it, I told my lawyer I wanted it argued, because I had done nothing wrong, and I didn't mind going into lock up on merit.
c. It makes me sad that in the new, investment friendly Pakistan, you should be opening up your house to people who claim they are the police. What a wonderful opportunity for thieves. If we haven't been able to improve the ease-of-doing-business, then at least we have been able to streamline the ease-of-raiding-houses processes and make them paper free. When the security alarm rang, the security system specialists had to come. They were told "koi PTI ka masla hai".
d. My children live at home in Islamabad, and my wife does. My daughter is applying to college, and my son is 11. I am incredibly proud of my family, for being as brave as they are, and living through six such months. I hope my children continue to believe me when I tell them that we moved back from abroad because one should be proud of their country. They may be puzzled by what is going on, but I hope in the due course of time, they will appreciate why it was important for their father to stand up for what is right. They will continue to live here, as many times as the police wants to come, because this is there house, and they live in a free country.
e. My father is unwell and abroad, and my mother is taking care of him. Mom, please focus on Baba. We will take care of ourselves. You have been a rock, and it may be your prayers that allow me to be strong.
I believed in this country, I believe in this country, and I will continue to believe in it. That is why I burnt my boats and came back. The way the law is being broken every day, whether the courts stand with us or not, we have to stand for what's right. I hope we can do it with humility and dignity.
