I think this boils down to empathy for the victims.

Imagine someone committed a heinous crime against you but everyone else swears they’re nice and does it so publicly invalidating all the horrors you had to endure.

Sometimes, it’s better to be quiet until you know more.

Someone has been accused of a grave crime in a country where their laws actually work, the kind of crime where you shouldn’t be publicly lending your credibility to the accused’s character or associating yourself with the matter in any way by proxy.

Instead of keeping quiet and allowing the law take its course, and if you must lend your support as a friend/associate of the accused, reach out privately or whatever, you’re online publicly vouching for the person as if whatever you post, or whatever you think of the accused, has any bearing on the outcome of the case, as if you have all the facts or you were there when the incidents happened.

No one is asking you to publicly burn your friend or associate, no one is blaming you for their actions, there’s no burden on you to say anything. But there is something deeply disturbing about going online to vouch for someone’s character in the middle of a very serious criminal allegation.

And this public solidarity sef is just you hedging your bets, so that if he eventually comes out of it unscathed, you can point to your posts as proof that you stood by him, and he can see that you never abandoned him him and not cut you off Lol.
