Commemorating the 36th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre

In the spring of 1989, tens of thousands of students gathered in #Beijing to mourn the death of a Chinese Communist Party leader who had sought to guide #China toward greater openness and democracy. Their actions sparked a nationwide movement. For weeks, hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens in the capital and across the country took to the streets to exercise their freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly, calling for #democracy, human rights, and an end to rampant corruption. The Chinese Communist Party responded with brutal repression, attempting to extinguish the democratic spirit of unarmed civilians gathered on the streets of #Beijing and in #TiananmenSquare .

Today, the Chinese Communist Party actively tries to erase the truth, but the world will never forget. On this day, we honor the bravery of the Chinese people who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of basic #freedoms, as well as those who continue to face persecution for seeking accountability and justice for the events of June 4, 1989. Their courage in the face of danger reminds us that the principles of freedom, democracy, and self-determination are universal—and that these fundamental human aspirations cannot be erased by the authorities in Beijing.
