But what I heard next…
made me drop my phone.
Because my wife said:
“There’s something you still don’t know about him…”
and then she mentioned a secret I’ve never told anyone......
The man laughed and said:
“Relax. That child is mine. He wil never know.”
At that moment…
something inside me died.
But I didn’t cry.
I didn’t shout
I didn’t confront them.
Instead I brought out my phone.
Pressed record.
Because if they want to play me…
I will play them better
The door opened.
And when I saw who walked in…
I wished I had never checked that ₦200 airtime.
Because the man standing there…
was my best friend.
The same man who stood as my best man on my wedding day.
The same man who calls me “brother.”
Then she said something that broke me completely:
“If he finds out about the pregnancy, we’re finished.”
Pregnancy???
My head started spinning.
Because we’ve been trying for a child for 3 years.
3 YEARS. And now…
now she’s pregnant?
But I didn’t go to work.
I came back.
Quietly.
And waited in the house.
Because I needed to see it with my own eyes.
By 11:26am…
I heard the gate open.
Then footsteps.
Then laughter.
Male laughter.
My chest tightened again.
By 1:43am…
her phone lit up.
She slowly picked it up and tiptoed out of the room.
My heart was beating like drum.
I followed her.
She went to the sitting room.
Sat down.
And then…
she whispered:
“Baby, he almost found out today.”
Everything in my body went cold.
My legs went weak.
I didn’t confront her.
I just went back to the room.
And waited.
Because at that moment…
I knew something was very wrong.
The next morning, she acted normal.
Prepared my tea.
Packed my lunch.
Even kissed me goodbye.
As if nothing happened.
That smile no be normal smile.
That kind smile you give when someone you like texts you.
My chest tightened.
I didn’t say anything.
I just sat down and watched her.
That night, she slept early But I didn’t.
I was watching.
Waiting....
I wasn’t even looking for anything.
That’s the funny part. If not for that stupid ₦200 airtime, I would still be living in peace… like a mumu. My wife is the type everybody prays for Calm and Respectful. Even my mum used to say, “Hold this one tight, no be Lagos girls.”
That’s when my mind started working.
I called the number, It rang once.
Then the person cut it.
Instantly. My heart dropped.
Two minutes later…
my wife’s phone buzzed.
She quickly wiped her hand and checked it.
Then she smiled.
