Europe has 450 million people, the world's largest single market, and it still can't defend its own airspace without asking Washington which button to press.
This is not a resource problem. Europe outproduces Russia in everything except will.
For eighty years the continent outsourced its security and called it "the transatlantic partnership." That partnership just changed its terms four times in four years, and Europe still hasn't updated its assumptions.
You cannot be a great power on borrowed deterrence. Rome didn't rent its legions. Europe rented — and the landlord is renegotiating.

Something very strange is happening across Europe.

In the span of a single week, NATO countries have seen a remarkable series of incidents involving ammunition production, energy infrastructure, military facilities, and russian intelligence operations.

Let me start with what we know.

🇵🇱 POLAND

On 7 August, Polish security services detained a russian citizen, recruited by russian intelligence, whose task was to execute a man holding both American and Ukrainian citizenship – in Warsaw.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced it yesterday. According to him, this is the first time someone acting on russian orders has tried to kill an American citizen on the territory of another NATO country.

🇩🇪 GERMANY

On 6 August, a drone carrying explosives was found near a runway at Leipzig/Halle airport – next to a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines cargo aircraft. Two days later, two drones were spotted over the Bundeswehr base at Mechernich.
Also not a rumor.

🇮🇹 ITALY

A fire in the powder compression department at the KNDS Ammo Italy plant in Colleferro, southeast of Rome, was followed by a massive explosion. No one was killed. The plant produces 155 mm artillery ammunition supplied to Ukraine through European partners.

🇳🇱 NETHERLANDS

Within a few hours at Europe’s largest port: a transformer fire, a major power failure, an emergency shutdown at the ExxonMobil refinery in Botlek, and then an explosion at the Gunvor Energy refinery and terminal that killed one worker and injured six.

I wouldn’t be surprised if russia is responsible for all these “accidents”.

I wrote about this problem two years ago. Back then, Europe was already experiencing an extraordinary wave of suspicious incidents:
🇱🇹 IKEA set on fire in Vilnius.
🇬🇧 An arson attack on a Ukraine-linked warehouse in London.
🇩🇪 Sabotage plots against military and industrial targets in Germany.
🇨🇿 Attempts to attack infrastructure in the Czech Republic.
🇪🇪 An attack on the car of Estonia’s interior minister.
🚆 Attempts to disrupt European railway systems.
📦 And later, incendiary devices sent through European logistics networks – including devices that detonated or ignited in Germany, Poland and Britain.

At the time, people could argue these were isolated incidents.

Today, we know much more. European investigators and courts have connected multiple sabotage operations directly to networks organized or coordinated by russian intelligence.
The pattern was real. It was simply diagnosed late.

That is the design. Hybrid war works by staying below the threshold at which any single incident forces a response. Every event, taken alone, is deniable. Only the sequence gives it away.
So when another extraordinary cluster of explosions, fires, drones, power failures, and intelligence operations appears across Europe in one week, perhaps we should stop treating every incident as if it exists in a vacuum.

Europe no longer has the luxury of automatically assuming accidents and coincidence.

Russia is waging a hybrid war against Europe. Sabotage. Arson. Cyberattacks. Assassination plots. GPS interference. Attacks on logistics and critical infrastructure.

These are not theoretical threats. They have already happened.

SNYDER: You can't imagine Trump or Hegseth visiting Kyiv. It's not that it's not going to happen. It's just unimaginable.

It's psychically impossible for them. They can't be in a world where people are actually taking real risks for real things.

That would be too much for them. They can't be in a place where there is courage.

That would be opposed to just manipulating the rest of us with words, which is designed to make them look tough.

They'd never take any risk for anything themselves. They believe that all talk of patriotism, democracy is just for show.

These are people who fundamentally will just tell you what you want to hear in order to get what they want personally.

For them, whole idea of democracy, and even national sovereignty, is all just a joke, right? Just a means to an end.

When they're confronted by others for whom democracy or national sovereignty isn't a joke, who would fight for freedom.

Not just use words like "fight for freedom," but who would, like Ukraine, do it, when they're confronted and are doing it.

Have been doing it for 4 and a half years now, they don't have a way to respond besides scorn, spite, and dismissal.

That's the only thing they can do, because they're in a world where those are all words, and it's all just words.

When they're confronted with actual human beings, men and women who are actually taking risks, they're helpless.

They have to get that topic off the table. They're only comfortable in a world where everybody is venal and hypocritical.

Where everybody lies all the time. And so I think that's the fundamental thing: it's just really uncomfortable for them.

Українських воїнів «забули» запросити. Проте їхню спільну перемогу не викреслити з історії нікому.
Я вважаю, що в Україні теж потрібно відсвяткувати цю перемогу. Ми повинні пам'ятати наших героїв, які воювали в тому бою не за Польщу, а за Україну.

@Gruzovoi40k Серпень сам по собі виснажливий і формує той стан, що осінью ми називаємо депресією. Це просто втома. Завжди. Людина входить в серпень виснаженою марафоном з весни, а тут спека, гонка до дощів і холодів, амброзії, алергії, зменшення світового дня, холодні ночі і динаміка в осінь.
