MEDIA STATEMENT: I WAS. ASSAULTED DURING CHIVAYO FUNERAL COVERAGE.
Assault on Journalist During Chivhayo Family Funeral Coverage.
It is with deep regret that what was supposed to be a field day for the media fraternity has turned into a distressing situation.
Yesterday, 8th of October I was assaulted by security personnel who were sent by a man who calls himself G6, (Joachim) a brother to Wicknell Chivhayo.
Background
My crew and I arrived at the Chivhayo residence for our usual media coverage. I had sought a program update recording with the family spokes, Mr Herbert Chivhayo, who suggested that, instead of giving me a funeral update alone, he would rather address journalists from all media houses.
I immediately contacted colleagues from The Herald, ZBC, Owen Madondo (DJ Ollah) and two other journalists for the press conference. I briefed them on the arrangements, and while my crew was still setting up, DJ Ollah called me aside. I followed him, only to find that he was leading me and handed me over to G6.
G6 immediately began berating me, ordering me to put my cameras down and stating that he had not cleared me for coverage.
I politely told him that I had been covering this story since the crash scene, where I provided live updates from midnight until early morning, and that I was not new but had also done extensive coverage from the residence over the previous days. He remained adamant and insisted that we that we stop recording and stand down.
I then went to the family spokesperson, Mr Herbert Chivhayo, and explained that I would not be joining the press conference I had asked for as I had been stopped.
He insisted that, as the father, all authority and clearance came from him, and that the press conference should go ahead with no one interfering and also stated that no media must be stopped or disturbed.
We proceeded with the press conference and then left the residence for the funeral parlour in town to collect the bodies.
The Assault
On our way back from the parlour along Gletwin Road, we were recording and broadcasting live close to the hearse when G6 shouted from his car, "So you guys mune nharo ka imi, I want to show you something." We slowed down and stopped filming to ponder. Immediately afterwards, a white SUV driven by his security personnel blocked us. Three men jumped out and came straight to me as I was driving. They attacked me with clenched fists and open-handed slaps for not more than 20 seconds, then returned to their vehicle and drove off.
This incident was witnessed by everyone in the convoy immediately behind the hearse.
Injuries and Legal Action
I sustained serious injuries, including loosened lower teeth, a swollen eye and severe jaw pain.
I have officially filed a police report at Highlands Police Station under RRB 6847154.
This is now an assault and criminal matter that we are pursuing, and my legal counsel will be assisting me.
It is regrettable that we have ended up here, all for the love of journalism and telling the story.
I have had a mutually respectful and good working relationship with my brother Ollah, up until what happened yesterday.
A CALL FOR RESPECT FOR JOURNALISM
It is regrettable that we have reached this point in the pursuit of our professional duty to inform the public. Journalism is not a crime, and no journalist should be physically attacked or intimidated for documenting events and reporting matters of public interest.
While we remain committed to conducting ourselves professionally and respecting reasonable, lawful arrangements made by families during times of bereavement, such circumstances must never be used to justify violence against members of the media.
I call upon the relevant authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and ensure that those responsible, if identified through due process, are held accountable in accordance with the law.
We will soldier on to keep telling you the story.

Banks must detect financial crime across every border.
Data privacy law says the data canโt cross those borders. Both are law. A bank has to obey both at once.
So we stopped asking how banks could share more data. We started asking a different question:
Does the data need to move at all?
That question led us to the Amanzi Exchange Protocol.
AXP.
The question crosses.
The data doesnโt.
Weโre looking for banking groups operating across borders to build this with us.
Invented in Africa. Built for the World.
