@TimBrzezinski @druinok Disagree. Special right triangle rules relate side lengths to angles. Pythagorean Thm. covers sides related to sides; the rules are a shortcut to the trig. We could instead have them memorize sin, cos, tan of 30, 45 and 60, but that’s a step beyond the scope of basic geometry.

@TimBrzezinski But really, the true answer is: that’s what they wrote into the standards. Why don’t we teach consecutive (same-side) exterior angles with parallel lines? It’s valid, but only corresponding angles are *necessary*, the rest are easily derived, so why these ones? Standards.

@TimBrzezinski I have wondered this too. I’ve thought it may be to relate it to SSA (which it is), but with a different name to distinguish it as a special case. Also because we generally haven’t had the full right triangles unit by that point, so the others you mentioned aren’t obvious (yet).

Kid misses TWO weeks, then returns and acts genuinely confused as to why she can’t keep up with the current material. And this is not uncommon anymore
