I paid $15 to rent Power Ballad (🌟🌟🌟) on demand & I think it was worth every penny. The story of a washed wedding singer whose song is stolen by a massive pop star & turned into an international hit, I think this film’s secret ingredient is that the story has a lot of heart. That’s without mentioning Paul Rudd & Nick Jonas are each excellent & the script comes with more than enough laughs. What’s more is that Power Ballad satisfies a key element necessary for success in Cinema: it finishes strong. Watching Power Ballad was a total & utter delight.
Paul Rudd plays Rick, a washed wedding singer who serves as the lead singer in a wedding band made up of a bunch of flunkies/losers. Rick isn’t as washed as, say, Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer because Rick 1) is married 2) has a daughter 3) lives a pretty chill life in Ireland, which is where his wife is from. But a key plot-line & a driving force for the story here is the fact that Rick gave up his pursuant of becoming a rock star so as to move to Ireland with his wife. In other words, Rick gave up his personal goals & ambitions to make his wife happy. Flash forward 15 years & Rick’s only real profession is covering a shitty wedding band.
Enter Danny (Nick Jonas). Danny was once part of some variation/version of what we all know to be N’SYNC or the Backstreet Boys. Danny was a young boy band lover & now that he’s grown up, he has to pivot & develop a new identity as a singer- something he can’t do creatively because he’s untalented. Notice how I call Danny untalented & Rick washed, the key difference being at least Rick was once good at writing songs, while Danny’s never displayed any such talent.
But the crux of this entire story is that Danny crashes a lavish wedding that Rick is playing at in Ireland. The two bro-out & have a heart-to-heart later that night, where Rick shares one of his songs with Danny. What does Danny do? Takes it back to LA & turns it into a smash hit. And trust me, I’m not giving anything away when it comes to the plot, this is all included in the trailer. Which is precisely why I say the last half of this film has so much steam- you don’t really have any understanding of where Rick’s journey back to Danny is headed, not at least until the film’s very final shot- which leaves such a lasting impression.
I want to close by just talking about Paul Rudd for a second. Rudd is so god damn good here. He’s hilarious as usual but his singing is also awesome & reminiscent of I Love You Man, in that he truly shows off his ability to synthesize music & comedy. I love that Rudd chose this film because I think he connected with Rick’s regret as an artist. We all have regret as humans & regret is sort of what masks Rick’s entire vision of the world. Rudd taps into that perfectly. There’s depth to his performance, he’s not just here for cheap laughs. I give Rudd credit not just for his work on screen, but for his vision in choosing this script & seeing where he could take this performance.
Power Ballad’s got a lot of heart & soul. I think you should see it.
Mel Brooks directed Spaceballs in 1987 & it’s one of the best satires in Cinema history. Now, 40 years later, Brooks is going to star in a Spaceballs sequel that’s set to drop in April of 2027. The sequel will undoubtedly miss John Candy, but the fact Brooks is returning for the sequel & will be acting again is why I’m excited. That, and Rick Moranis is ending his acting hiatus.
America turns 250 this weekend & I’m asking you to tell me your favorite piece of American Cinema. Independence Day always comes to mind when I think about America. Films don’t get more entertaining than this, which is a quintessential popcorn flick. Whoever you are & wherever you are, I hope you’re enjoying the 4th.
