We are in Randburg Court today where the #BlueLightMafia 8 are back on trial. I’m attending with parliamentary colleagues Glynnis Breytenbach, Lisa Schickerling, and Damian Klopper.

All 8 SAPS Presidential Protection Unit officers, caught on video brutally assaulting civilians, were recently acquitted by an internal SAPS disciplinary process.

Despite clear footage, national outrage, and the trauma inflicted, they’re back in ‘uniform’. No accountability and no justice in terms of the so-called disciplinary accountability.

POPCRU even called for my removal as police portfolio committee chairperson, but it is our constitutional duty and they will not dictate to us, we are NOT their rubber stamp.

The state had a duty, under the SAPS Disciplinary Regulations, to act swiftly and decisively in cases of serious misconduct. In this instance, the facts were not in dispute: the assault was recorded on video and widely circulated and more.

The onus was on SAPS to prosecute the disciplinary case with urgency and competence. Instead, the process failed to meet even the minimum standards required to prove misconduct. It was a test of institutional will, and SAPS failed it.

In my capacity as Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, it is my responsibility and that of our committee to hold SAPS and its systems accountable. That includes questioning how this outcome was ever possible.

Oversight is not incitement.
Criticism is not misconduct.
Accountability is not negotiable.

We remain hopeful that the criminal proceedings will be upheld with the integrity and independence justice demands.

On 16 July, the Portfolio Committee will specifically focus on legislation and litigation, both critical tools to rebuild public trust and enforce accountability.

We will not let this be swept under the rug.
