On this day in 1904 General Lothar von Trotha arrives in Swakopmund in German South West Africa as commander-in-chief with orders to crush the rebellion of the native Herero tribe. My photo taken 22nd October 2025.

On this day in 1944 German troops of the Waffen-SS Division "Das Reich" massacre 642 civilians in Oradour-sur-Glane as a reprisal for the execution of one of their commanders. The village remains as a memorial to the victims. My photo taken 12th August 2016.

@DanielPriestley In my comprehensive school in c.1980 only 10% of pupils were "taught" economics. I was one of the 10%, with the teacher dictating from a book, with little explanation. Despite that it was still far more useful than French, for example, which was compulsory.

After 700 years, the High Court Chancery Division, with its origin in the Court of Chancery, whose exact date of foundation is unknown but existed by 1315, satirised by Dickens, no longer exists, having now been absorbed into the High Court's new 'Business and Property Division'

The Allies, aware of the immense difficulty of capturing a port to support the invasion, brought their own harbours. Code-named Mulberry Harbours, they were towed from England. One sprang a leak and was beached in the Thames Estuary off Shoeburyness. My photo taken 25 March 2025.

On this day in 1944 Allied forces landed on 5 beaches in Normandy to begin the liberation of Western Europe from Nazism. One was named Omaha where most casualties were suffered as US troops were mown down as they landed. My photo of Omaha Beach on 26/8/09

On this day in 1942 Axis forces began Operation Störfang, their assault on Sevastopol after besieging it since late October 1941. This monument to its Hero City status lies outside the city. Photo taken in August 2008 prior to the occupation by Russia in 2014.

On this day in 1941 the Germans complete their occupation of Crete . Named Operation Mercury, it was an airborne invasion using paratroopers that defeated a larger Allied force but at a heavy cost. My photo of Rethymno harbour taken 23rd September 2025.
