This was a particularly rich session that I had the privilege of hosting. Always great to work with partners at UNDP and UNESCO-IOC - and always great to work in support of coastal resilience!
Last week, the “Blue Horizons: Strengthening Coastal Resilience in Asia-Pacific” side event brought together governments, UN agencies & regional partners during #APDR2025. A key highlight: the new @JapanGov supported initiative led jointly by @UNDP, @UNESCAP & @IocUnesco to develop a Regional Roadmap on tsunami early warnings for education, placing education at the center of resilience-building.

The UN in Afghanistan is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck the eastern region & claimed hundreds of lives, injuring many more. Our teams are on the ground, delivering emergency assistance & lifesaving support. Our thoughts are with the affected communities
🌊 #AsiaPacific is the most disaster-impacted region. With risk rising faster than resilience, action is urgent.

If I was to choose to do another research thesis, it would be an agent-based evacuation simulation - very fun research technique, but also completely applicable to informing how best to prepare the public for disaster events!

We hold all parties to the standards of international law.
We don’t have to choose – and we must not choose – between ending the starvation of civilians in #Gaza and demanding the unconditional release of hostages.
My remarks at Security Council:
🌊 #DisasterPreparedness saves lives.
For 20 years, the @UNESCAP's Trust Fund has supported 12 countries in #AsiaPacific to be ready for tsunamis, storms & other disasters, together with @RIMES_news & @IocUnesco.
